I'm 19, female, and in college. This is for a summer formal with traditional dancing. I've done this type of dancing before but never in a poofy floor length ballgown.

Thank you!

Not sure what you mean with "traditional dancing",
in cases of waltz or Vienese walts, it is perfectly ok to lift the hem of a poofy floor-length gown (or longer, one with a train) with one hand and continue to dance.

In case of partner dance, the hem lifting is done with the left hand, and placed low on the partner's back (instead of the shoulder).

If the gown is not sufficiently long or poofy, this maneuver would expose too much of a lady's legs, and therefore is not recommended.

Practicing with the actual gown would help getting used to having all that material.

THe secret is to look like you do this all the time, and you and the gown are "one" :).

And... enjoy your outing...

In ball room dancing it is slow and smooth.
You do not jump around and wave your arms etc.

Just SLOW AND EASY.

Same as always. Be extra sure you drag your feet. Lifting them is asking for trouble.
