My dog is a very smart dog. For the past few days he is on anti-biotic and it is a challenge to feed him medicine. First I tried mixing the medicine with water and tried to feed him using a syringe. We tried holding him and open his mouth only to find him struggling. We tried hidding it with cheese, tibits and canned food and failed. He will sniff first and ignore the food completely or spit out the food and eat the food and leaving out the medicine. The ways that we tried successfully is putting him into his water or milk but he did not finish it as there will still be some residual left. He is a small dog (cross terrier) of less than 8 kg but he know when we mess his food with the medicine! Is also thinking of putting him for a week in animal hospital for post surgery stay so that the vet can do the injection for us.... he is scheduled to go for surgery next week. We have been given 14 portion of the medicine and we have successfully fed him 4 but he has also wasted 3.

Since you've tried to hide the antibiotic in cheese etc, I will assume that it is a capsule form. Have you tried hiding in in a small section of wiener. Simply slice of a small piece and tuck it in the middle. Usually the strong odor of the wiener will disguise the odor of the capsule.

You didn't say what kind of surgery your dog is scheduled for..is it a routine castration or are his testicles non-descended and in his abdomen?

Regardless of the type of surgery, the vet apparently thinks your dog needs the pre-op meds and if you are unable to give them to him successfully, let the vet give him the antibiotics by IM injection.

It's never okay to stop giving your pet it's medication half way through, although I can understand the impulse to do so having a difficult to medicate dog myself. The best way that I've found to administer a liquid is to gently hold open the side of the mouth just enough to fit the syringe in, squirt while holding the snout, and then continue to hold until they have swallowed all of it. This usually takes two people, but the medication does get taken. Another way to try would be to mix it with some tasty canned food along with some kibble. Try to get your dog excited about mealtime and it will be more prone to finish all of it. Good luck. If it's in pill form, shove it into a spoonful of peanut butter then scrape it onto the roof of the dogs mouth. If it's a big pill break it in half and use the peanut butter a couple of times.

Keep trying. All dogs are difficult.

This may sound cruel, but you basically have to choke them, get someone to open the mouth quickly and at the same time shove the tablet as far back as you can go so their only choice is to swallow. Also, hold their mouth shut for a few seconds afterwards to encourage it.

It is important not to stop midway with medicine of all sorts. If you stop midway, the bacteria that is left is stronger and harder to get rid of next time. It could pose a serious risk for your dog if you just stop. Think of it this way, it is only a week, and how long is that in the scheme of things? Not long, so just do it!

It's always dangerous to NOT finish a course of anti-biotics. The logic is that the anti-biotics help you build your resistance back to normal while it fights the bacterial infection. Doctors will perscribe a dose and duration that will bring you back to "normal" level. However, stopping a dose half-way means that you have fought the infection half-way and without help building up your resistance, the infection might overcome your natural resistance and relapse with a vengence... means you'll have to take a stronger dose if you do...

No, it's not ok. Antibiotics are very important and if you only give him a few you can actually create antibiotic resistant bacteria that can become impossible to cure. Call your vet and ask him to show you how to safely poke the pills down your sneaky dog's throat!

It is kinda important that your dog does have the medication,I have a terrior as well and what I found is that if I take a small ball of raw hamburger, take my pinky and make a hole into the ball, put the medication in and then pinch the meat back closed, then she swallows it in one gulp without even knowing it is there, give it a try and all the best of luck to you and your dog

I have a Maltese who makes it almost impossible to give him a pill. I discovered that if I put it into a bit of soft butter, he gobbles it up. If the pill is big, I break it. So, if you know what your dog loves to eat, insert the pill in that. Please immediately let the vet know what is happening. Good luck!!!
