hospital, which isn't very near and has a very depressing emergency room.. But we trust her with our five year old and we feel that she cares for him and we also feel comfortable with her as a person. But there's a new hospital that just opened which is a lot nearer to us. It's state-of-the-art and the emergency room isn't depressing at all. The whole hospital feels like a five star hotel. But the pediatrician that we know doesn't have clinic there. She's at the old hospital. In case of emergency, I'd favor the new hospital's ER, which wouldn't scare me to death. So the question is, should we stay with a pedia that we know and trust, but is at a hospital we don't like, or look for a new pedia at the fabulous hospital? Help me weigh this, please. Thank you.

I'm a Pedi, myself and I'd tell you that you should stick to your old Pedi who doesn't have a fancy clinic ( she probably doesn't feel the need for one, if her service is absolutely tops! ), rather than start going to the new one. If you ever have an emergency ( and we hope you don't ), who can stop you from going to the new hospital's ER?
Stay with her, your kid'll get good, personalised attention.
Go to the new one, and you're not so sure!
After all, should appearances matter so much?

If you've got a great relationship and comfort with your current ped, why change? Newer and bigger isn't always better. In case of emergency, depending on the seriousness, the medics will take the child where the needs for that particular incident are best met.
Going to an e.r., you're just a number in a line. If you take your child to the e.r. in the new hospital and have questions about what course of treatment they recommend, you can always call your own ped and ask her opinion.

My husband and I are also using a friend who is a pediatrician. Our dilemma is not that he is at old hospital - it is that he is over 50 miles from us. When a child gets ill we make the trek to our friend. On the weekend when our middle was ill we went to the nearest hospital (that he is not with) for care. Keep taking your son to the doctor that you trust. If he needs emergency care, go to the new hospital (but don't be surprised if the care isn't good - ran into that one also). Good Luck.

I would do both. In the event of an emergency, your child(ren) would be taken to the NEAREST hospital. Once stablized, you can make the decision to transfer him/her wherever you like. If you have a good rapport with the other pediatrician and you feel comfortable with her with your child(ren), don't give that up. Good doctors with good bedside manner are few and far between.

You could always continue to see your current doc for regular check ups and go to the other, newer ER if you have an emergency and take the on call doc. (Which is most likely who you'd see at the other hospital in an emergency anyway.)

tell the pedia that you have how much you LOVE her
kindness & then explain that since the other hospital
is closer to you you'd prefer to go there & would she
be able to recommend someone there who is like her.
If she really cares she will do this for you w/ out a
problem. Good luck

Make a list of questions that are important to you and interview Drs at the new hospital. If they aren't willing to take a few minutes to answer your questions they won't take time to really care for your child either.

I would see how my child acts towards the new dr.
trust in a dr is important. if something happens they do take to nearest hospital.
when he starts school you should send him to the new hospital to contact and tell them your dr. you see for regular check ups is this dr.
try the dr in the hospital for 1 visit see how your child acts.
otherwise, stay with dr. your child is familiar with. and just use new hospital for emergency number.

You do what is best for your child never mind YOUR feelings about either place. The pediatrician's focus if they are any good is not on the parent's well being but the child's.
