I am the consular officer now responsible for all Lebanese immigrant visas to the US. As you know, in Athens we are processing all the Lebanese with current, approved immigrant visas as quickly as possible in addition to our regular workload, with my staff of three local employees and a half-time officer. If your husband is in Syria, his life is not in danger. That means he is far more fortunate than most of my customers. There are another hundred or so other countries where he can go, as well, and be equally safe.

There is no such thing as a "vacation visa." Everyone who applies for any kind of US visa is either an immigrant or not; your husband is an immigrant, and he will have to wait until we receive his approved petition. Be very, very glad that he is safe in Damascus.

If he is free to travel, then why cant he just stay in Syria, or Northern Lebanon? The embassy cant fast-track his visa application just because of the problems in Southern Lebanon. Sorry, to be so blunt, but chances are he fits the image of just the type of person the US would prefer to stay away. Who knows which Moslem extremest is amoungst us anymore? Christians maybe fools at times, but we dont blow ourselves up, trying to take out as many as we can!
