All is not lost you can get a passport at short notice via the Passport Agency, it will cost, depending on how quickly you want to travel it takes 3..4 weeks for a normal application [possibly more in the summer season]), or you cna pay more for a quicker application
best thiong to do is to look on the airline website that you are thinking flying on, and see what they advise. A word of caution don't book untill you are certain you have a passport, the UKPA will not accept liability for alte or delayed doucments.

The only places you can travel without a passport from the UK is England Scotland Wales and Ireland, I think Ireland. I think we should be able to get into other European countries with just an id. card.
