Car Insurance is a minefield! I go through about 50 companies and brokers every time mine or my wife's is up for renewal (just been doing mine this week), and have changed insurer almost every time!
If you do use one of the brokers sites (like confused.com etc) - always go to the site of the recommended insurer, and repeat your quote there - sometimes it's cheaper again.
The website below has some good advice - just search for "car insurance"...

The cheapest is the lowest quote that you get.

Every quote is different as they are based on a number of factors including the car, your age, sex and marital status, where you live, how many miles you drive per year and what you use the car for, your driving record and sometimes even your credit rating.

Every insurance company has its own underwriting criteria. Nobody here can say that any particular insurance company will be the lowest for your exact situation.

I went to confused.com and they were really good. But then I saw the Tesco advert and they were even cheaper. Both available online, and after ages of scouting around at the time mine was due I decided just to check these two in future.

Be aware about excesses and stuff though, I went for a slightly more expensive quote (only by about 40 quid) and got a policy with no excesses and a free courtesy car. Worth an extra £40 I thought!!

I don't necessarily think there is ONE cheap one, the best thing is to just shop around and look at the options and what you're getting for your money, the lowest isn't always the best. Some will include courtesy car, low excess, windscreen cover, stereo cover, others won't so check out what you're getting for your money.

When doing mine i also found that you can get quite a good discount for buying online. Hope this helps.

For first time insurance for a female driver in the U.K try
Bradford & Bingley they beat any quote by at least £300 when my partner insured herself.
The only thing is if you have an accident in the first year it will double the next.

The one for a Trabant, assuming they even charge you at all. They'll probably do it for nothing just to thank you for the laugh. Hell, they might even pay you not to tell anyone thay've insured it for you.
