For pilecap of 1.50m depth, we use 2 U bars (T&B). The length of the U at one side is 0.85m. What wil bel the minimum lapping length. Please advice with respect to the safety of the structure

trick question! the pilecap doesn't have a reinforcement bar!

The length of lap will vary with location, size of bar, concrete strength, grade of steel, type of concrete, bar spacing and cover, lateral reinforcement, amount of stress in bar and whether tensile or compressive. Therefore, this has to be designed by an engineer to meet the demands of the joint and cannot be subjected to a simple rule of thumb

An accepted rule of thumb is to use 40 times the diameter of the largest bar on the lap.

So if you're lapping a 12mm with a 16mm, use a 640mm lap.

you should have given more details on your problem i.e how many floors of building are you designing size of the steel reinforcement its structural grade the design mix of your concrete how many piles are there supporting the pile cap and the area of your pile cap how could we help you if you have an incomplete data
