That's an awesome question.... and one I haven't heard in a long time. I used to ask my mom this.
It's not a matter of knowing them for a long period of time. I have known this girl named Heather since we were in first grade together. We used to be 'best friends' in school. I still talk to her, but as for being a best friend, I wouldn't say that.
I have a friend named Shelly. We have known eachother for about 6 years, and yes we are best friends.
But not due to the fact that we've been friends for 6 years.
Then, there is my little sister, Alisha. She is also my best friend. Not because we have known eachother our whole lives.
With Alisha and Shelly it's the same factor.
Trust.
If you really want to know how to find that best friend, or when to know you can call them your best friend....
It's when you give them your trust and they return it to you, unharmed.

. . . depends how long it is before they'll give me cigarettes, buy my drinks, lend me money, introduce me to their sister, or maybe their mom . . .
