I am afraid your father was not quite correct. Maybe he said that in a particular situation. But as a fire fighter, you ought to know that fire needs to be fought with water (or other extinguishers). As a rule, when you fight fire with fire, you end up getting ashes.

your father was right in a way in bush fires to stop them from moving in a direction they didn't want it to go "towards homes or people" they would set controlled fires to take it in another direction hence the saying "fight fire with fire"
