english is not my mother langage so plz forgive me:
Three friends(Tom, Jane, Andie) go out to a restaurant to have dinner. After they eat, the waiter tells them they have to pay 300$. Each gives 100$. After 2 minutes waiter comes back and tells them he made a mistake and returns 50$. So they decide to keep 30$ (10$ each) and give the waiter a tip of 20$.

So : Tom payed 100$ - 10$ = 90$
Jane payed 100$ - 10$ = 90$
Andie payed 100$ - 10$ = 90$
-------
270
+ 20
--------
290

so where are the rest 10$??? i know theres no ACTUAL solution to this but it annoys me!

As you correctly start, what T, J and A finally paid was:
T: 100 - 10 = 90
J: 100 - 10 = 90
A: 100 - 10 = 90
-----------------------
270$
This includes the bill and the tip:
the bill (250) + the tip (20) = 270$*
Up to here everything is correct.

270 (T, A and J paid 90 $ each - right?)
- 20 (the tip) you need '-' here, not '+' !!!!!!!
------------
250 (the bill)
Everything is fine. Nothing is missing.

HOWEVER,
the problem occurs when you continue by adding one more tip of 20$ to what we said was (the bill+ the tip) or 270$*:
270
+20 (you shouldn't use'+' here)!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-----
290 - this is actually 250 (the bill) + 20(the tip) + 20(the tip) !!!

But actually T., A. and J. n e v e r paid a second tip of 20 $. This is a DIFFERENT situation. But you are made to think that 290 has sth to do with those 300$ T, A and J paid earlier. And they make you think so by tricking you to add 20 when you should substract it - see !!!!!!!!!!!!! once again.

I hope this makes it clear

10 p.?

Donot get annoyed by the puzzle.

Each spent $90. That is $270 total, out of which bill payment is $250 and tips to the waiter is $20.

OK?
Problem solved? Why worry for the $10, which is not there?

$90+
$90+
$90+
$270

They paid $250 for the room leaving $50 to divide three ways.
But $50 divided between three people dosen't make for an even number, so the waiter got the change, which I'm guessing would be around $10.

Ok try this one.
They paid $250 so got back $30 And gave $20 to the waiter, stuff the division.
$250+
$30+
$20+
$300

:)

ok it originally cost them $300 but they had a refund of $30 and gave the tip of $20 so they put $10 back in their pockets and basically are just giving $90 and then a shared $20 tip costing $290 overall

Its a trick Question making you think its $300 take $50 + $30 + $20 but its not (your + the $30 but should be - it)
its:
$300 - $30 + $20 =$270

don't get bother. the solution is the bill is of $250. but they paid $300. so they $50 refund. they kept $30 and gave $20 to the waiter. now add
250+30+20

the whole amount you paid is 250$, 250$ plus 20$ you tip for the waiter the total amount of 270$ plus the 30$ you decided to keep, the total amount of 300$..... ha.ha.ha.

250$- Total amount paid
+20$- tip for the waiter
+30$- you kept on your selves....
--------
300$ all in all

there is nothing wrong with the question...there is something wrong with the solution though....throw the solution out of the window....its supposed to be 270 + 30....because the 20 was not deducted from the 300 before the 30 was deducted...so how do you expect to get 300 by deducting 30 then adding 20?had me stumbled there for awhile...

well thr is an answer....
Visualise this scene on a table

The bill earlier was 300$
Later it was 250$
so now thr is 50$ left.....waiter gives it back
keep it on the table................
30$ as tip frm all 3
so money left on the table is 20$
So 10$ is not lost !!!
That 20$ can be divided among all 3 !!

Anyways it was a good question !!

I don't understand it seems you already figured it out? $250 the bill +$30 they kept +$20 the tip. 250+30+20=300 its all there.
