tv are more square for maximum vision and the filmmakers in the old days film things on tapes and tapes come in strips which have a series of frames as rectangles. Like an animation. Square has more area than a circle. With circles, we will have problems with subtitles!! it would work with circles but it is more wasteful.

A round TV would be very cool!

I suppose historically it would be more convinient for it to be a box to incorporate all the components they used to have but now everything is smaller it could work!
