shes never gone to the doctor about it or anything, actually ive never mentioned it to her before because im afraid of her reaction. Ive talked to my mom and discussed it with some mutual friends before and they think its a possiblity. I just dont know what to do because she gets so mad about things and its at the point where i may cut off contact with her because i cant deal with her mood swings any longer. i just dont know how to go about talking to her or even how to figure out if she could be bipolar...if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated

The only way to be sure is to make an appointment for her to be evaluated by a therapist. Bipolar disorder is difficult to treat but there are meds that will help to stabilize her - if she acknowledges that there is a problem and is willing to stay on her meds. Is there an angle you can use to encourage her to be seen by a professional?

Good luck and best wishes.

This is a very tricky situation, and the way I see it, you have two real options:

1. You, your mother, and others who she cares for can calmly tell her that you notice problems with the way that you interact and reccomend seeing a counselor together to work out your differences. Diagnoses and treatment can originate from that.

Telling her that you think she has a mental illness probably will piss her off even more.

If she seems hostile to the idea of counselling, dont press her, and let her know that it is an open offer and is good if she at any time wants to take it.

2. Take a break from her for a while, but dont cut her out of your life completely. Sometimes some temporary space does wonders to cool down hostile situations.

I hope this has been of assistance.

Dear girl she doesn't have bipolar disorder unless she is very depressed and withdrawn from society. The bipolar doesn't know the second vocabulary or how the aura works to make our emotions. A bipolar person has to be an outsider or an outcast. You can see how the disorder like that gets more severe with time.

anybody can have mood swings but if it goes off limit and u really think that she has got a problem u need to confirm it inorder to help her.Cutting off contact with her not going to help her.Take her (or u can even get them home)to a mental health professional like a psychiatrist/psychologist/social worker etc who can help you to really reach in to a conclusion and then treatment ifnecessary. Believe me BPAD can be effectively treated.Act now!

You know its doubly harder for the person aflicted with bipolar than it is for "victims" like yourself. Bipolar meaning she goes from being extremely happy to excessively depressed in 2 seconds flat ? Best way for you is to have your parents take your sister to see a doctor and get her checked. Unchecked, bipolar can be very devastating. I had a friend who wasn't diagnosed properly with bipolar earlier who killed himself during the depressive side of his mood swings.. Hope that doesn't happen to you, its very painful and all my friends and I feel guilty we didn't do something about it when he was still alive.

I would risk her wrath and tell her. There are medications that can effectively deal with this disorder if the person is compliant in taking them.
