It sounds like you are interested mainly in the non-sporting, toy or terrier groups.

Bichon Frise

see links at bottom of page:

Or perhaps a Pekingese.

You could try a King Charles Spaniel:

If you want something scruffy and small instead of silky and small, go for terriers. They were bred to hunt rats, and will gnaw on your foot while you eat breakfast and things like that.

If you're really interested in unusual toy breeds, why don't you poke around on the Crufts website. The 2003 winner, 'Champion Yakee A Dangerous Liaison,' was a pekingese, the breeder was accused of having plastic surgery done on it to give it the perfect Pekingese face. This is the territory you're entering, I'm afraid when it comes to cute and fluffy.

The report: "But such anonymous tip-offs are nothing new in the dog equivalent of Miss World, now in its 101st year and the biggest event of its kind in the world. After last year's competition, an informant whispered to the Kennel Club and the dog press that the winner of Best in Show, a fluffy-haired, caramel-white coloured Pekinese called Danny, had had cosmetic surgery, which is banned under the contest's rules. It was, of course, nonsense. The dog, otherwise known as Yakee, a Dangerous Liaison, had had an exploratory operation because of persistent tonsillitis. Bert Easdon, the dog's co-owner, still bristles at the memory. "I don't want to discuss what happened to me last year," he says."

There are many rare purebreds, but they are often expensive!

Chinese Crested are very nice little dogs that come in two varieties (one hairless and one fluffy, called the Powderfuff). Japanese Chin are also very nice dogs.

Find a good breeder referral by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. Toy breeds can have problems - you should get the best one you can!

You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money.

The best breeders will be members of their breed club, promoting healthy dogs with great temperaments. They should ask you a bunch of questions to make sure their puppy will be getting a good home. If all a "breeder" seems to care about is whether your check will clear, you can be sure he won't care a week later when the pup is dying from distemper or parvo and you want your money back.

Whatever you do, DON'T go to a pet shop, a flea market or buy one sight-unseen off the Internet!!!! You'll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog that is often sick and may have falsified registration papers. And you'll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=cruelty_puppymills

Mixed breeds are lovely. There are lots of fluffy breeds, but you shouldn't pay breeders when there are loads of dogs in rescue centres needing homes.

I love poodles myself, they are cute, fluffy, playful and intelligent and very loving and cuddly. You can get miniature or toy poodles which are nice and small. You can also get poodle crosses with other breeds. Labradoodles are poodle X labradors and they are lovely.

There are other fluffy breeds like Bolognese, Pekingnese etc. But if you want real individuality get a cross breed. They will be like no other dog and a real individual.

Visit your local rescue centres first as you might find exactly what you are looking for there and will help by giving a home to a dog who needs one.

You are definitly looking for a dog for the wrong reason. You need to make sure you want a dog because they are a big responsibility. They depend on you for everything, food, water, exercize, clean up and everything in between. You can always look at the local shelter, there is bound to be a dog fitting your description "cute, fluffy" and what can be more unusual than a mix-breed? Sometimes you can even find papered dogs at the shelter. If you are dead-set on spending lots of money on a pet, you can look up toy or miniture breeds on the net.

Caution: many of the rare breeds are rare because they don't fit tempermentally in many households. The affinpincher is probably the most unusual of the toy breeds if thats any help but their cuteness is a matter of opinion.

For 16 years I had a female who was 3/4 GSD 1/4 coyote. She was a good blend of both in terms of appearance. Her temperament was like that of a GSD, thankfully. Dog people tended to think she was a Belgian malinois. Those who were more suspicious of her heritage I just told them she's a shepherd mix and left it at that. As my aunt used to say, "You can have whatever you want as long as you paint it brown" (are inconspicuous). I was at the "Meet the Breed" area during the annual vet school open house. I got a good laugh when a hick mom yanked her kid away from the very friendly Doberman saying, "Dobermans are mean!". Her other kids were meanwhile hanging all over the pit bull!!! Added: Before the early 1970s most Americans who were not seriously into dogs did not know what a Rottweiller was. We had neighbor couple who had a pair they'd brought over from Germany. Most people thought they were humongous Dobermans. It wasn't until "The Omen" came out that the American public became familiar with Rotties.

Go the rescue centres and give an abandoned dog a loving home. They are already vacinated, wormed and spayed/neutered and looked after by professials who will let you any potential behavior problems, not like some breeders. Also, mongerals are generally healthier dogs due the large gene pool and they don't suffer interbreeding.

My sister has a sibarian husky, and he is only allowed to eat one brand of dry food and nothing else. When he was a puppy, he had stomach problems and had very runny green poo. I have two mixed breed dogs and they are much much healthier and better behaved.

Only buy a predigree, if you can afford the extra vets bills and are only concerned about the image of the dog, even tho they are some very cute mixed breeds out there.

Well, assuming that style and cuteness is not your only reason for wanting a dog.....

I think the most unique dog would be a mixed breed from a shelter - you will never find a second one just like it!

Otherwise, consider long-haired chihuahua.

Yes, get a standard dog and modify it, it seems to work for youngsters cars these days, there is a mark 2 Golf down the road from me that looks very unusual.
For an unusual dog try lowering it`s body by taking a few inches off its legs and putting some big bass speakers up its *rse to annoy the neighbours with your inane taste in music.

Usually, which too long for me. I consider it depends on the guy and his face though. Certain guys may pull off long hair and other folks can't.
