Of course it's normal to mourn a pet. Why wouldn't you? You loved and cared for them and they loved you. What's more normal than to feel grief when they die.
Not to mention the trauma of losing your dogs the awful way you did. People who do these sort of things are heartless, depraved sadists. It would be hard for me to feel any sympathy for whatever is wrong with them, at all.
You may not know this but there are people and groups that get together to talk about their feelings concerning the loss of a pet. You might want to talk to a vet in your area and see if he knows about such a group. God bless you!

Sounds like a painful memory. I lost a 16 year old cat 2 weeks ago and it still hurts very much. He was always there wanting to be held and was always meowing. He was a total lap cat and was so spoiled. I miss him terribly.
I had a dog a few years ago that supposedly bit a man. They took him away and were supposed to hold him for 2 weeks and then I called and found out they killed him the 1st day. That hurts terrible still.
I think sometimes its how long you have had them, how close, and of course the way that they died that bears on the mind and remains in the memory.

If you have been close with the animal, yes you mourn. I have had 5 dogs and about 8 cats. They all have a place in my heart. The last dog, when he got sick and died, it broke my heart. Every time I see one that looks like him, I feel bad all over again.
Since you are still young, you might consider having another dog companion. You are now old enough to know what to do to take care of it.

Time will heal. Pets do feel like part of the family, so when they do go its like losing a family member. I guess with time it will get easier, but 15 years is a while ago now. You can;t changed the past, only look to the future. Have you tried councelling ? It maybe there is an underlying issue somewhere which is not helping you move on.
Hope this helps.

I miss my kitty very much. She wasn't even a nice kitty but when you take care of another being you become attached. I just really wanted to answer this because I don't understand why people would even answer a question about pets if they don't like pets. And the people who said they don't mourne for their pets must not even like animals.

i have had many animals........ some of them have died when you are very close friends it is hard to not cry cuz they were ur best friend...or sister/brother. they were like part of the family... even havin to give them away is heart breaking...i know from expereience...my mom always says to never name a pet the same as the one that died and or had to give away it will bring back to many memories... the next best thing is to think of happier things or to think of the fun times u both had....... that is what i do
