A carpet is typically set on a pad over the subfloor. To create a clean joint at the end of the room, the installers place a strip of wood with small metal tacs facing the wall. The carpet is then stretched over these tacs, holding it (theoretically) permanently in place. However, as the room is used the carpet can pull away from the wall, either due to traffic or the carpet stretching. Pulling the carpet is a process where someone goes around the perimeter of the room with a small wood board and stretches the carpet back over these tacs. It makes the carpet look better by removing any slack.

Carpet is manufactured with many different amounts of fiber known as the face weight per square yard.
This is the amount of yarn used to create the pile or the surface of the carpet.
One cannot see all the yarn that is incorporated into the finished product. A portion of the yarn is embedded, by loops, into the primary backing, where it is then anchored or sealed with the use of latex. Then the secondary backing is applied. This is the backing which is visible from the back of the carpet.
The weight of yarn is the total amount used per square yard and is indicated in ounces, abbreviated as "oz".

I'm pretty sure this is ounces. When you buy carpeting it is measured in ounces per square yard . Although when we recarpeted I believe they had converted the measuring to square feet, since that is the way most everything is measured
The heavier the weight, the more expensive the carpeting per square yard.
The padding is measured the same way.
