5 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup Crisco
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup molasses
2 tablespoons vinegar
Mix dry ingredients in large bowl. In another large bowl, beat the Crisco until it is soft, then add the sugar and beat until fluffy. Add the rest of the ingredients listed and beat well. Add the dry ingredients gradually, beating well to make sure it is very smooth.
Chill the dough overnight. Divide the dough into thirds, and keep the rest chilled. Roll out on floured board, cut out figures, and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 F for 5 to 6 minutes. Let them cool a minute before transferring them to cooling rack. Decorate them when they are completely cool.

A note on the molasses. You don't want to be mixing it with cold ingredients or it will be very difficult to work with by hand into the dough, and you might burn out your motor if using one of those stand mixers.
