I once had a venison joint in my freezer for 7 YEARS and because we had nothing else in the way of meat we cooked it......it turned out to be the best ever meat we had tasted.
I dont recommend this though unless you are completely confident about what you are doing. NEVER REHEAT MEAT UNLESS YOU COOK IT AT AN EXTREMELY HIGH TEMPERATURE.
You can eat anything past its sell by date by about a week as long as it has been refrigerated . Dont forget its a sell by date NOT an eat by date.....usually. you just need common sense and smell it, and look at it carefully both sides. ANY MEAT PAST ITS SELL BY DATE SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY WASHED IN COLD RUNNING WATER BEFORE COOKING
Poultry is 'hung' for days without refrigeration and is the better for it.
Read up about food hygeine on here!
Cheese that has gone mouldy can be scraped under the cold water tap, dried ,and eaten with no problems.
Stale bread (1 week old)can be held under the tap briefly and it will be PERFECT AGAIN. Let it soak overnight.
When youv'e been a student living from hand to mouth you learn these tricks. Just use common sense though!

Don't worry it will be ok. I spoke to the butcher in Sainsbury's once about this and he said that stores always give a good lee way when putting on use by dates. You can tell if it is ok by the smell. If the joint is "off" you will know ! Just make sure you cook it all the way through.

Open the packet and smell the meat, if it is dry or a dark grey colour do not eat. If it smells fine cook it. Cut it then have another sniff. The use by date is for safety but one day should be fine. Enjoy.

Go to the shop, buy another one and the next day take the old one back and get a refund saying you bought it yesterday, tell them you had friends coming to dinner and it ruined the whole evening and you might get some vouchers as well.

There used to be a time and day before they had sell by/ use by date labels. Cook it, smell it, taste it.... you'll know if it's still ok. As someone previously said, it would not have gone off at midnight!

Cook it. Unless you have kept it at room temperature since you bought it, then throw it away.

We have had joints of meet in the freezer at home, and they have been months past their use by date, and they have been fine to eat.
