More police will statistically help reduce crime. But for the most part is wont make much of a difference. Committing crime is a choice. Sadly you cant get people to choose the right thing.
Free will, what a *****.

Yes, more police reduce crime by just their presence.
Believe it or not, the most effective form of police crime prevention is the basic traffic stop. Stopping cars for traffic violations (speeding, running lights and stop signs, unsafe driving or even faulty/unsafe cars, etc.) snags a huge number of people wanted on warrents, drunk drivers, guns, drugs, you name it. The only way to do more traffic stops is to have more police on the streets.

the best and cheapest way to reduce crime is to arm responsible citizens and for the community to work with each other police departments actually increase crime by creating a false sense of security among its citizens and thereby creating a sense of dependency that is not effective

The number of policemen will not guarantee reduction of crimes because the criminals operate wherein they are usually not detected by the law enforcers. The number could be a deterrent but if criminals are good, it is futile.

It would reduce maybe break-ins and other minor crimes, but it wouldn't really help murder, etc.
