I've heard from a friend of mine that was in the marines..The marines "program" their guys..but when they leave, they don't unprogram them. Hence this can hurt the family life. It hurts the person who left in knowing how to deal with the outside world...agree or not? If this is true...why doesn't the military make some well needed changes?

This is not true for the Marines, or as Dr. An'zer U on here claimed in his answer, it's also not true for any branch of the Military. I know Marines, I know ex-Marines, and they have great family lives. And though my husband isn't a Marine, he has still served in the Military for twenty years, and we have a perfectly normal family life.
I think anytime you have served in the Military for a long time, like in the case of my husband, life is going to be different when you get out and start living as a civilian, but the military has classes that do prepare you for that. My husband is retiring from the Navy in two years, and he has already started these classes. They prepare them for everything from saving money to job interviews. They encourage you to start these classes a few years before getting out so you can start preparing.
People seem to think that our Military is brainwashed. Sure, they are taught to fight and survive, but it's not like they walk around like a bunch of animals! And I think Marines and Specials Forces seem to get this reputation more then anyone else. It's just ridiculous.

The marines or any branch of the military does not program or brain wash soldiers. Sadly there are instances of abuse and hazing that takes place but those are the exception not the norm. There are also people who choose to take their devotion to their military branch to the extreme. Like many people who lose touch with reality they choose to become consumed with their service and that can be very unhealthy. I am in the Air Force now and was in the Army before and I can tell you that military people are very normal. They have families and concerns like everyone else. We are patriotic and caring, I do not like to see hurt civilians but there is only so much you can do.

No this is not true, I spent 30 years in the Marines fighting for this great country and I can tell you this is not true! Marines are tought to fight and kill, that is the nature of war, But you should thank God we have done it over the years for your freedom. And if your friend was one of the few and the proud he should get it, We come home from combat proud of what we have done. Ask your friend if he ever saw combat, I'll bet you he didn't or he wouldn't be filling you full of crap. And as far as changes the Marines don't need them, the only changes needed is the respect we deserve from you when we get home after fighting for your rights. All we have ever asked is not to be taken for granted. I came home from Nam and got spit on, did that change the way i feel about what I did for my country? No, because I love America and you should to, Walk a mile in my shoes and then you can ask such a question. Semper Fi. And your welcome!

Wow, conspiracy theories are at it again! And what exactly are marines programmed to do? LOL.

To the guy above me: Killing is not fun in any sense of the word. You are enforcing a stereotype idiot. I don't believe a word you are saying. I am a vet that served in Iraq, and I can tell you that in now way any men were having what you call 'fun'. People like you make people believe in the media.

Perhaps this is being confused with a Star Trek The Next Generation, where they showed soldiers who were actually programming as fighting "machines" and were then exiled because they couldn't be blended back into regular society at peace time.

How do you program a brain of a human? Or the Marines got some computer chip inserted their brain?

Your friend is talking about "training", training them to kill and hurt. Not to love. A Marine is a man trained to be a killing machine, and when returned to his family it is up to him to change his acts and return to his civilian "behavior".

You may see o TV or on camera Marines who are laughing or look like any other decent people, but when this guys load their guns to the field, KILLING is like a fun, and shooting and blowing up stuff is the most entertaining moments. Let me tell you about it.

Experienced in Somalia. Ask me about it. Most of them may deny this.

You can't unprogram some one, but can reprogram. But why would the military do that, that would cost them money. maybe that person need to unwind and know that his training has no place in this world.

Of course, soldiers who will go to the front are 'trained' (this is better than the word program') differently from others, because they will be expected to do certain things against their upbringing and culture and they will be exposed to things they have never imagined. The 'training' (programming if you like) prepares the soldier for the job ahead.

no, it's not true. it is true that some people can be unable to leave the mindset of the military after a long (long) time in some branches (e.g. delta), but not the marines.

You can be traumatized from what you've seen. Some soldiers in WW2 would have constant flashbacks and couldn't cope back home. But what you're describing is a myth.
