Is it like fashions, that change every now and again? Or does it vary according to country, or sub-sect? Surely it needs sorting out once and for all before judgement day so that we know where we stand?

The Bible says it's blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Suicide was thought to be an unforgivable sin because it's a "mortal sin" as originally defined by the Catholic Church, and since you are dead, there is no way to ask forgiveness for that sin.

I think it's all rubbish, myself, but that's the reasoning.

I have heard of the unforgivable sin described this way -

If you receive the Holy Ghost and grow in your relation with God (you know that you know that God is real), and then you stop your relation and even say that God is not real, then you have committed the unforgivable sin.

It not just knowing God and committing a sin (you can still ask for forgiveness) but turning completely away.

It's whatever that sect, church, school, group, individual claims it to be.

I don't know, but I'll say it's highly probable that it will never be "sorted out" with a 100% guarantee among the entire Christian population.

So, don't get your hopes up.

...and personally I'd say you should decide for yourself. Autonomy is best.
