They can fly for short distances. I remember when I was little my Dad got a bunch of turkeys and they ran loose all over the neighboord hood and on two occassions they were chased off by neighbors. They flew across the road on one occasion and on another they flew down a hill. Both times they were on a hill and scared. I don't know if that made a difference or not.
I just found this information:
The wild turkey lives and breathes in the wild and some are kept as pets. It can fly and is said to be smarter than the domestic. The domestic are the type eaten on Thanksgiving and cannot fly.
The ones we had weren't wild but they were not kept in pens either so maybe thas is the difference. Some of them were quite huge. My Dad finally wised up and gave them to a farmer.

While young wild turkeys and females can get off the ground, they are a long ways from flying like the wind. Older Tom turkeys can't get off the ground at all. The answer is heavy. Turkeys are not aerodynamic. Think Ostrich or Emu. Chickens don't do much better. Even wild ones.

The most common domestic turkey is the broad breasted white and they are too heavy in the breast to fly. Wild turkeys and some domesticated breed can fly.

Wild Turkeys fly like the wind, but domestic turkeys are bred for large parts which weigh them down to the point of flightlessness.

The American national bird was going to be the turkey, if Ben Franklin has his way.
I offten wondered how the bird and the country have the same name.
You don't find turkeys in turkey, so how did these words come about?
Would you rather soar with the eagles or be bogged down with the turkeys?

Common misconception. Turkeys CAN fly. It's the domestically grown turkeys intended for slaughter, that are bred to be so heavy they can't fly. Wild turkeys have no problems there.

Because they are domestic birds. These birds have lost they ability to fly because of us. We are giving them food and shelter and this makes them domestic and they don't need the skills to fly anymore. Their bones aren't like those birds that can fly, they aren't empty from the inside this makes them heavy and their wings and body aren't designed to fly.

Real wild turkeys can fly and are very smart. The turkeys you are talking about have been bred not to. It is because they are bred for eating only. Domesticated turkeys are so stupid that they can drown in the rain.(no kidding)

Well, I know they are all wrong. I have been going turkey hunting since I was a little one. They can fly up into trees at night to roost that's about it. up to a tree or down from one. no actual flying.

As noted on a episode of WKRP years ago. as a Thanksgiving prank, they would drop turkeys from a helicopter assuming they would fly. Of course they fell like 'sacks of wet cement.' The classic line, "as God as my witness I thought turkeys could fly!"
