I am currently stationed in Hawaii and I am looking at getting a 06 jeep wrangler sport. Do i need to purchase a hard top? is the soft top that comes standard good enough for tropical conditions? any input would be great, thanks in advance.

Hawaii nights get as cool as like 55-60 which nice, but it rains in some areas like 24/7 here.

Stay with the soft top only, no need for the hard top, it's a pain when you start taking it off, no space to keep it, then you never are in the mood to put it back again and when you put it back it never fits right in the first time and it will cost you another hour to make it, with some luck and help. Besides, once you take a good look at your Jeep without the hardtop you won't use it anymore.
For the record, a Jeep with hardtop is as boring as dancing with your sister.

I live in Michigan and haven't used my hardtop in two years. It can get a bit chilly, but with the Heater I never have a problem. My Soft top has even weathered some pretty nice sized hail, I don't think that you would need a hardtop at all in Hawaii.
Good choice for a vehicle, I'd love to drive my wrangler around Hawaii with the top down.
So jealous.

If 55 is as cold as it gets, don't waste your money. I live in Idaho where it's 105 in summer and -5 in winter, and I only have a soft top. Winter mornings are a little chilly, but you don't have that problem. The soft top will be fine for you year round.

You should be allright. We have Jeepers who run Soft tops year round, through rain and snow. Something to think about, by puting a hard top on your jeep will change handling characteristics by raising the Center of Gravity, although not much, it will be noticeable.

I had a soft top in Utah and went to ski resorts regularily, just remember when it gets cold out, not to unzip the windows as they will crack. Two things a hard top does is protect what your carrying from the stray thief and cuts out road noise. Stay topless and drill drain holes into the floor.
