My advice would be to avoid direct sunlight _and_ use sunscreen. And good sunscreen too. I usually get terrible sunburns; this summer when I did get to the seaside, I had procured a good SPF 30 sunscreen, and it worked. But generally, I try to avoid direct sunlight, especially around noon / early afternoon. Meaning, if necessary, long (if thin) sleeves and pants / skirts; and wearing a hat. And using SPF (UV A + B) protection cosmetics.
Yes, direct hot sunlight can be very harmful to the skin. However, we have good means to protect ourselves, nowadays.

Yes skin can be damaged by overexposure to the sun. This is due to the warming effects of the infrared rays as well as the potentially damaging effects of the ultraviolet rays.
in overexposure, you can get actinic eczema, and various keratotic changes in the skin. This results in a thicked epidermal layer of the skin as well as increased amount of eczematous lesions and increased tanning as well.
UV rays can also cause melanomas in the skin and these are actually malignant lesions.
What you can do is probably to avoid the sun, wear some sunscreen if you have to go into the sun, and wear long sleeves.
Hope this helps. :D

You need to make sure that you have the right factor sunscreen on for your skin... otherwise yes it is!! ..... and if you have very pale skin then wear make up that has sunscreen in it! And maybe wear a hat! You can still enjoy the hot sun if you protect yourself!
You might not tan as quickly as you would like but you will eventually and surely thats better than going 10 years down the line and looking like a leather coat!!
Up to you.....

As of last May it was reported that we need 20 minutes of sun everyday in order to get the vitimine D we need. If you are worried about tanning, you could get a nice tan if your out 20 min. a day.

Well, if you've ever had sunburn you could answer this question for yourself. It's hard to find a mag that doesn't tell you about the problems in the summer if you are looking for further reading.
