Most people who own dogs view them as more than 'mere property'.
Dogs provide companionship and many people have some sort of emotional relationship with their dog. This can range from the nauseous 'he's my itsy-bitsy baby' to the mutual respect between a professional handler and his or her working dog.
Police and military dog handlers, shepherds and farmers have been known to shed tears when their working companion dies.
Between them you have the family dog who is very much a member of the family and loved by all and perhaps only tolerated by others.
Anyone who goes out and buys a dog but does not actually need one as a guard dog, guide dog, sheep dog etc. is buying a companion and is expecting to build a relationship with that companion.
My dogs are all different characters and demonstrate different levels of 'affection' towards me. They amuse me, worry me, cheer me up, irritate me, make me exercise and are a joy to own.
They enrich my life in much the same way as domestic dogs have enriched other lives since their wild ancestors decided that living with primitive man was mutually beneficial.

No, pet should be treated as pet and given all rights admissible for a pet. However, they cannot be treated like your other tangible properties rather a living creature having senses & feelings.

Our doggie is viewed as a member of the family.
Recently we took him to the vet and totally forgot to bring money...our kids get free health care, so we weren't even thinking about having to pay for the dog, because to us, he is just another kiddo!

My cats and my dogs are my family and my best friends. I do not view them as property, as I nurture them. I do not nurture my clothing or TV. Property doesn't care if you exist, or not. My pets are very happy I do, and show it!

Much, much more. Our Pooch is the greatest addition to the family since our children were born. She loves us unconditionally, is full of fun and mischief and encourages us to take exercise every day. On top of all that she warns us when strangers come to the door before they ever knock.
