Today, my bf and I were hanging out and he said "You are a very special friend," and I am not sure what the hell that means.

Some history: He and I have been together for 6 years, and lately I have been asking him to move to the next step in the relationship and he says that he is not financially settled or ready to get married, but he knows we are gonna end up together. He is in his late 20's and I am in my mid 20's.

He saying you mean a lot to him. That is good he wants to wait till he is financially stable. He wants to make sure he can take care of you before you tie the knot. He doesn't want to rush in a marriage with nothing. Give him time I'm sure he knows what he is doing. He just wants a happy long life marriage with you. Best of luck!

Well, it's pretty clear that if you can't talk to him about what he means, it's too soon to be thinking about marriage. Good communication is key to a successful relationship, and if there's things like this that you still can't talk about after six years, it means you still have a ways to go before you're ready to get serious and take things to the next level.
So, go ahead and talk to him. Find out what he meant by it. That'll be far more productive than asking us to take wild guesses at what he might have meant.

he is telling you he wants to hold on to you but is scared to move to the next level ,not , he is saying i want to use you and i want you not to put any pressure me while i use you, like i have these past 6 yrs some more, oh and by the way i really don't love you or i would not have wasted your time like this ! now it seems harsh but no its the tough truth and for future reference ask any guy out there when they met someone they think is special they want to claim that person yet will only offer what that person ask for exp. if you said we have been together for 2yrs now and said that it is time to move forward or to leave ,he if he loved you would have put a ring on your finger, or let you go but you would have saved 4 yrs. time that could have went to some one who would have loved you .

It sounds to me like he is trying to distance himself from the relationship. He wants out but is testing the waters to see what you would say to that comment. Just straight up ask him what he means by that comment but only if he brings it up again. If it starts a fight he has a way out...if not then he will continue to drop hints. Either way you get to the bottom of it.

well I hate to jump to conclusions but maybe he is guilty about something.

Although, you might not want to read further into what he says. He might be getting closer to wanting to take the step you want. And hey he may even be trying to prep you for the proposal. Or trying to spit it out without stuttering.

why don't you have some time out?
leave him for a few months and see what effort he makes to get you back.
an engagement ring would help.
