I heard it in a song... But when I looked it up... "A body of troops arranged in a line" It just doesn't seem that significant, am I missing something?

An echelon is more generally a level within a hierarchy. In the Bible it also refers to the levels of angels in their own hierarchy, as if they are also soldiers with ranks.
