because of the general anesthesia, they don't want you throwing up.. better to have an empty stomach. you're not even supposed to drink anything after midnight. but don't worry about the piece of cheese. good luck

There's a small chance that they will have to put you under full anesthetic and intubate you (put in a breathing tube) if something goes wrong. People have been known to vomit during the intubation procedure and there is a chance that vomit can get into your lungs and damage the tissues and/or choke you causing **big trouble**. The chance of vomiting is much, much smaller if there is nothing in your stomach, therefore doctors insist that you not eat before planned procedures.

Again, we are talking about SMALL CHANCES - I imagine they are just going to do an epidural to numb you but that you will be able to be awake, aware, and breathing on your own during the whole procedure. And the cheese should not be a problem just try not to eat any more - they really don't want full meals in there when they start.

Congratulations and good luck with your new baby!

You're likely going to be all right with the cheese, although, I would recommend telling the nurses if they ask you about it. It is an anesthesia protocol, because of several things, the most important being: 1) the medicine will likely make you nauseous and it may be dangerous to vomit if you do not have an empty stomach, because of the possibility of choking or obstruction, 2) the chemistry of your blood changes when you eat, thereby affecting the chemical reactions of medications they will give you, their guidelines are calculated assuming an empty stomach.

I doubt a small cheese wil be seen again, but a large meal will not be fully digested before you go into surgery for your C-section. The anestiesia will make you nautious. If they have to insert any breathing devices, it may induce a gag reflex, in that case you could choke to death on your own vomit from food that is not fully digested. I would suggest to drink plenty of water to prevent any possibility of throwing up.

A cesarean is an operation. Sometimes patients can vomit up what is in their stomaches while under anesthetic. There is a serious danger of suffocation.

That being said, a small piece of cheese would "probably" be digested by then.

In the case of an emergency, they may have to give you a general anaesthetic, which would cause you to go unconcious. While unconcious, your stomach contents may empty and you may aspirate them, so they tell you not to eat anything so that there will be nothing to aspirate in the case of an emergency. Aspiration of stomach contents can cause permanent lung damage, pneumonia and death.

Because any anesthesia used on a patient can potentially make them nauseous. So it's better to have an empty stomach before any surgery.

You don't eat after midnight on the night before surgery so you won't aspirate, or inhale undigested food into your lungs while you are under anesthesia.

Fasting is requested before any surgery because there is always a danger that vomiting may occur and food may enter the windpipe. This would be highly undesirable.
