I live alone in a new house with my cat. It's a 2 story 5 bedroom house. Sometimes I hear a slight "thump" or a "bump" upstairs from time to time. Today I was petting my cat when he jumped up, stared at the wall, looked behind me off to the side and hissed. He has never done for the 3 years I had him, what does that mean? do cats hiss randomly sometimes ? but he stares at the walls sometimes or into space.

Well could be a couple of things... If you have a mouse in your walls your cat can hear and smell it....
the other thing is all houses have creepy sounds from settling and your cat has better hearing than you so she knows which wall is settling and stares trying to figure it out...
of course theres always a sense of a ghost living with you... of course your gonna get lots of contraversy over that.. i beileve in them but that is me not everyone else... if more goes on than a cat staring at a wall i personally would check into it....

H3LL NO they never do that for no reason, see if the feeling of something bad is coming from it or the memories of its death, walls absorb energies of things around it, in most cases the ghost just doesnt know its dead so when you feel it around just keep telling it that, but its still a person so speak nicely, till you think its mean then get a preist or a good wiccan to cleanse the house for like 3 days or whatever. oh and for the answer above WHY WOULD CATS HISS AT RODENTS OR A LITTLE RUSTLE IN THE WALLS.

It sounds like you might want to check with an exterminator. When startled by a noise a cat will hiss. Mine have hissed at rodents in the walls. Listen closely to the rustling before your call, where I live, estimates are not free.

It reminds me more of rodents or other critters than anything else.

Yeah, cats do that, they hear a mouse or a cockroach in the walls and the primal instincts kick in.

There are no such things as ghosts, so relax.

big house for you to be alone - chances are there may be rats/mice about and in walls. The noise and the cat's reaction very well could be naturally because of this.
You almost seem to be suggesting something else - but please definitely check the natural reasons why first. don't let your mind play games.
