My daughter and her family get a Christmas photo done every year. They have in the past worn western clothes, matching shirts and pants, etc. The main thing they've done is go to different places and have a great background. Once, it was the Grand Canyon. Other times it was an interesting statue--you get the idea.

You could all wear red and green especially for Christmas photos. You could wear formal in red. Black and white would be like taking a black and white photo. Be colorful and joyous!!!!

What best captures what your family is like? If you're kind of formal, go formal, if you're silly, wear crazy hats.... The point of a Christmas photo is to share with family and friends what your family is like this year. Do what feels natural.

Each person should wear what they are comfortable in, their family will want a reflection of who each person "really" is when looking at that picture especially in the years to come.
you can always pick a back ground that will blend it all together.

I'm a photographer and think that demin blue bottoms (either jeans/skirts) and a white T or shirt looks great esp. if you have outdoor shots at beach or in a park etc. Hope this helps.
