omg.. for crying out loud they cannot train themselves!!!! Do you really expect them to automatically know you want them to go out that door to take a crap? They have to be trained lady! Your fed up? I am fed up with people not training their pups and then coming here and crying about it.
Get a bell hang it from the door and ring it each time YOU take them out potty (OFTEN).. If they do not go put them in their crates for 15 minutes and then try again.. DO NOT leave your door open, and do NOT allow them to run freely in the house!
When you cannot watch them, place them in their crates with a chew toy..Don't have a crate? shame on you..go get them from walmart, they are cheap.
Go to google and put in crate training and you will get a ton of web sites on how to do it properly..

Many of us on this site are quite knowledgeable about how to potty train puppies. I have a question for you...did you do any research on it BEFORE you got the puppy? If not, why not? E-mail me if you want and I will give you a bunch of pointers....but I need to know: 1) Age and breed of puppy 2) Your age (if you are the one doing the training - if you are not, then whoever is doing it should be asking the questions). 3) How long you have had the puppy 4) Is it crate trained 5) How much dog experience do you have You will probably not need to e-mail me. You will likely get some good tips here but if you don't, you know where to find me.

You really can't let them out of your sight while they are learning where to pee. So close off some parts of the house (with doors or baby gates) to restrict the spaces that you need to watch. These are obvious times that they will need to go:
- 10-15 min after eating/drinking
- After napping
- Right away in morning
- As soon as you get home if you go out
- As soon as you see sniffing and circling around
In all of these cases, you should immediately lead the puppy outside to the designated spot, say the key phrase ("hurry up" or "go potty") and wait for them to go. When they do, praise them a lot, offer a treat *immediately* after they go, and they reward them with play time. Don't play with them outside until they've gone.
You say you leave the backdoor open, but I think the issue here is that the pups don't know where they are supposed to be going. If they knew, they would go there!
And if you catch them in the act, interrupt them with a startling noise and get them outside imemdiately to finish. Then praise them as they go outside. If you don't catch them in the act, don't bother trying to discipline any of them because they won't know what you're talking about.

go to www.clickertraining.com and learn more about positive training. Including housebreaking.
Basically take them out after every meal, playtime, sleep and give lots of praise for pee and pooh outdoors.
Supervise them constantly. At one point we had four pups and four adult dogs (and 1½ys old twins) and we got them housebroken by supervising and takeing them outside, so it can be done. Besides if you find pee or pooh, just wipe it up, it doesn't matter who did it, the "offender" wouldn't understand why you were angry anyway. If you see one in the act just take it outside quickly.
If a pup starts to circle and snif the floor get it outside, that is a sure sign that it needs to go.
put them in a crate next to your bed, so they can wake you up in the night if they need to go

If the dog goes potty in the house I rub their nose in it and pitch them outside. Some might say it is mean but I only had to do it a few times. My puppy was house trained at 10 weeks. Also praise them when they go potty outside.

Consistancy and Confinement!!
You need to keep the pups confined to one area, like the kitchen, when you are not able to keep an eye on them. It takes them time to learn they are to potty outside, at 12 wks they are still pretty young. It took my pup til he was 6 mo old before I could trust him with full run of the house and not have to worry about him having accidents all over.

It's gonna take some work and some time....at this point they wont make the connection of go outside. Use a piddle pad in the house.......you can get them at petsmart or any pet store....when they go pee or poo.....pick them up (the poo too) and put them and the poop on the piddle pad. Keep placing them on the pad.......if you can catch them mid pee.......put them on the pad so they can finish peeing.......PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE....than you can take the piddle pad outside and when they go pee or poo inside...........take them oustide to where you want them to go........PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE....as they get older.....you can start to scold a bit and put them out when they go in the house..........but at this point it will be moot.........they won't understand why you are getting mad. Be patient............it will work. We just potty trained a Blue Merle Aussie and she still has accidents every once in a while........but she is lots better. She is not even 6 months old. Be patient and praise good behavior! Good luck!
p.s. I wouldnt put newspaper in the toilet.......it's gonna clog for sure!

it takes time and patience to house break dogs.....you might have to follow them around all day for a little while...catch them in the act....tell them no and put them outside with the mess...eventually they will get the hang of it
patience is the key word
