You can work for up to 20 hours a week on a student visa. If you get a job on campus, then you do not need any permission from the INS. However, if you plan to work off campus, then you need to go to your nearest immigration office and apply for a part time job permit. You have to be able to prove to them that you really need the money in order to pay for your expenses and also, you will not be taking a job away from an American citizen. It is up to them to grant you a work permit, which usually valid for only 6 months but is renewable. Without this permit, you would be considered an "illegal"
Based on the above, you can imagine the type of work you can probably get. On campus, it is probably assistance to some professor in research, or may be working the cafeteria. Off campus, it could be any number of menial jobs, which usually do not pay too much. Hope it helps.

You can probably work in a restaurant. I'm not sure how student visas work but that's where a lot of foreigners work.
