For 2 years, I was friends with a guy in Dublin over the internet. A while back, he "introduced" me to his roommate, and we are crazy about each other. He's visiting this Fall for the first time, and I have never been so excited. However, I know my family would never approve of the relationship, simply because it began online. But I know my feelings are real; I have never felt so strongly about someone. I just don't know if I should pursue happiness with someone I adore, or cater to my family's wishes and settle for less. On the one hand, I'm with him, but my family is severely disappointed.... while on the other hand, I'm miserable without him but pleasing the people who raised me. What should I do?

If you're in love with him, if he's a good guy, then your parents probably won't have a problem with him. They're probably just critical of him because of the net, as you said. And it's not that they don't want to like him, they just know, as you do, what kind of crazy dangerous people you can find on the internet. They're probably more concerned and worried about your well being than they are disappointed in your choice of mate. I hope he is everything that you've dreamed him to be and if that is the case, your parents should love him. Good luck.

How old are you? You may adore this person on line, but this person may be better at writing than talking. He may not even be the person he portrays on paper. If you are of age (18 or older), you might want to meet this person, but don't claim your undying love for him until you get to know him better. Currently you are miserable without who you think and dream he is, but after the meeting you will have a better chance to evaluate him, and let your family meet the real person.

The final choice will always be up to you. Meet him first. Make sure he's still the same guy offline. Then you can work on making it a legitimate relationship. Your family wants you happy. Heck, if it's serious enough for them to meet him, say you met at starbucks when he was over visiting.
