advantages of ms word?

The advantage is portability. The disadvantage is you have to pay for it, and microsoft office is expensive. If you can't afford it (or don't want to), try using Open Office.

If you're not doing a lot of word processing, just use notepad. (start, run, notepad, OK)

You don't have a lot of selection to choose from, but it's mainly for html writing.
