I believe you should be careful about grouping all Atheists into a single category. Much in the same way that a Christian shares similar but distinctly different views with a Muslim, or even with another Christian, so too do Atheists have a wide range of opinions on this matter and many others.
"We" (human beings) are here simply as a product of evolution, of increasing interconnectivity and specialization. Evolution can take on many forms and happens all the time, a good example other than our own bodies is probably the Internet and this discussion we're having right now. What began as a simple network to transmit tiny amounts of data between two people has evolved very rapidly into a self-sustaining, extremely intricate network with many different parts. A similar thing happened to us and all other life on this planet, and indeed non-living things off this planet (like 3rd generation stars being different than 1st generation stars), it just so happens to have happened over a much much longer timespan.
Of course that's a pretty conventional viewpoint. Where I tend to drift off is on the whole question of time itself, and indeed the very wording of your question. Your question is driven by a desire to have a beginning and an end, but there is no scientific proof to suggest that such a thing exists in this universe at all. There is no proof that time exists, and many people at the cutting edge of the scientific community suspect that time is really a figment of our imagination. Our limited ability to percieve the world as it really is gives way to our own interpretation that when matter moves, it moves relative to something absolute, when it reality it may only be moving relative to our frame of mind.
That leads to a simple answer: If time does not truly exist, then there is no such thing as creation (i.e. a beginning), and alas no such thing as a Creator. How did we all get here? We didn't come from anywhere; we just are.
As always, no solid proof on either side, just our own imperfect speculations. :)

I would assume you mean the universe and not just organic life on Earth....if you mean the latter then the answer is evolution. For the former, abiogenesis might answer part of the question (but it's a hypothesis at this point) then there is also the Big Bang (very strong evidence backing that up)...before that; don't know; I think it's intellectually wrong to make up answers when we simply just don't know.
um, nora...what you are describing is something more along the lines of how a deist might answer the question of origins.

Im a theist not an Atheist. To first address the question, i think an antheist person does believe in a starting point of the universe but don't see it as a God designed or created universe. They believe that through random time and chance somehow all the elements nessecary to sustain the basic enzymes of life came together and from that point things evolved into earth as we know it in a nutshell. In laymens terms we know that when you leave something to time and random chance wether it be humans, animals, or anything made up of matter it doesn't evolve but breaks down ,decays and dies, just drive by your local cymetery for proof. Maybe it is more believable for atheist to see it this way.My stance on the question is that there is too much design in the universe to not have a designer behind it. When people say then who created GOD my answer is GOD is the beginning and the end and GOD stands outside of our earthly laws of space, time, and the other dimensions quantum physics say exsist, but is eternal in origin and supernatural in orgin made up of infinite dimensions in which our peaknuckle minds don't have the ability to understand or have the ability to engage to the same frequency as GOD'S mind. That's what attracts me to place my belief in a higher power in the first place. I think science tries to study the mechanics of GOD to the best understanding of human logic but all it does is show more evidence that an intelligent, mathmatical genius was behind the genesis of it all. I would rather believe and listen to something divine then mans small minded attempts at best to say how it all came about. Going back to why I personally believe GOD to be behind it all is because of the mathematical probalities that show how far fetched evolution really is. For example what are the odds that are planet residing within our milky way would be so perfectly placed in proximity from our sun and moon that conditions on earth would be well enought to sustain life through random time and chance? The calculations of British mathematician Roger Penrose show that the probability of universe conducive to life occurring by chance is in 1010123. The phrase "extremely unlikely" is inadequate to describe this possibility.

00000000000000000000000000000000
00000000000000000000000000000000
10 00000000000000000000000000000000
so i well end by saying i believe my odds are greater with GOD then man!

As I said 10 minutes ago, billions of years ago, thousand of different gases in the universe chemicaly combined creating solid earth and water. This, combined with the perfect distance from our sun created the perfect breeding ground for life. It started with singled celled organisms, and that organism slowly evolved into multi-celled organisms. They all than began to evolve into all the life forms we see on earth today dependent on the organism's global location. As for the universe, it had no beginnig and will have no end. There. A good perfectly reasonable response. I 'd like to see a religous person give a response that makes that much sense.

Do the research to what science has proven as far as the origins of the earth. Life is nothing more than an amazing coincidence. The right elements and molecules mixed at just the right time, and the first life forms sprang to life in the seas. Over time, they moved beyond those confines, continuing this cycle until eventually humanity arose. Nothing more than an unending cycle of evolution, spanning millions and millions of years.

“No, I don’t think of that atheists would desire to be seen as electorate, nor would desire to they be seen as patriots.”-George H. W. Bush This, regrettably, is the strategies-set maximum human beings carry in direction of atheists. In a modern poll, over fifty one% mentioned that they could under no circumstances vote for an atheist for the presidency, regardless of their skills or historic past. For some reason, theists look to have a deep-seated perception that being superstitious is a distinctive characteristic.

Although I am not a true atheist, I can answer that.
Most atheists and agnostics believe that there is or was a power or force that started everything, but that it has since died or gone away to another part of the galaxy.

Well technecally we got to this point in space at this time, meaning the Earth, because our planet is moving in space around the sun. In turn the solar system is moving out ward from a single point in space. You ask a stupid question, you get stupid answer.
He that cannot reason is a fool. He that will not is a bigot. He that dare not is a slave.

No one knows how we got here.
No one knows where we're going.
For someone to claim they do know is pure arrogance.
All we have are questions, no answers. We have some "good thoughts" as to why ... but nothing conclusive. We may never have answers. Learn to be at peace without knowing.
