got like mugged like 3 weeks ago, and of course for obvious reasons, I dont want it to happen again (hit 3-4 times, knocked out, got back-pack stolen).....Im NOT NOT NOT gonna carry gun, or a knife anything like that....but I have seen these like key-chains type things...kubakons, brass Knuckely type things, to have when your walking to your car.(SELF deFence purely).....What if i had that one of those type things on my keys (I heard Brass Knuckles were illegal, concelled weapon)...and was walking to my car, get attacked, use IT on an attacker, and really hurt him, or even kill him....do i go to jail, or get fined, or get in trouble?!?!?! EVEn if I was just defending my self????

Im looking into some classes about, how to take an attacker down, but it seems like one of those would be good to have as well. ANyone know the law, in which you defend yourself with a weapon that isnt like legal, but you use it purely for Self defence purposes ???what happens to YOU???

It is against the law to possess "brass knuckles", or any derivative of them. Your 1st best bet is NOISE. Scream and yell, draw attention to yourself. OCS spray is a good self defense, but you must have it in your hand ready to use for it to be effective. Keep in mind though, if someone draws a weapon on you, cooperate and give them what they want. Nothing you own is worth your life. Just last month in my town a sailor home on leave was carjacked. He resisted and was shot and killed, over what turned out to be a set of fancy wheels on his truck. Those wheels did not keep him out of a body bag. Property crimes are not worth the risk of resistance. If you are already being assaulted or if someone is attempting to take you somewhere else, then fall back on resistance. If you get OCS spray, get the kind with flourescent dye in it. Turns the sprayee a pretty bright red or green. Helps us out in ID'ing the suspects too.

If you use a weapon that is illegal to carry, you will face charges...self defense or not. If you cause serious injury with that illegal weapon, odds are good you become the criminal, not the victim. Just not worth the risks. You can face criminal charges as well as be liable for any injuries you cause. Yep, the guy that mugged you could sue you if you bust him up with those brass knuckles....and win. If you are armed and your attacker isn't? You could very well find yourself in the wrong. People go to prison for assault, assault with a deadly weapon for the very thing you're talking about.

There are many ways to defend yourself without resorting to brass knuckles, illegal knives...truth is, you would most likely find yourself injured by your own weapon.

I won't say not to carry a weapon, not my place. What I will say is to make sure that whatever you carry, you are prepared to use without hesitation. Whether it's pepper spray or a baton, knife or gun...don't count on flashing it to the bad guy and having him run. Odds are good if you show a weapon, the situation will escalate, not de-escalate.

Self defense classes are the better option. It's better to know how to defend yourself without a weapon because you're not always going to have that weapon or be able to reach it in time.

fisrt of all consult a lawyer or your local law enforcment agency. Becuse it differs from state to state. However where i live, self defense can only be equal in an assualt. So if you push me i can push you back, but if you push me and i push then kick you then i become the aggressor. Clear as mud? Also you have to consider that your carrying this item is preconcieved, you know you have it. A defense attorny may bring tht against you. As well as if you lost conteol of any such item, could it be used against you in the attack? Consider that most attackers watch their victims. Look into a self defense class of good standing. The ones that we giive at our agency teach how to use every day items as self defense items such as an umbrela opened up on an attacker can buy you time. Or perfume oor hairspray often times kept in a purse can be substituted as mace. Weapons of any kind can be seen as a false since of security!Good luck to you and stay safe

Well, for starters, I'm very sorry that happened to you. I hope you're never in another position where you have to defend yourself.

Moving on, I'm pretty sure that if you were to defend yourself with an illegal weapon, you would get in some kind of trouble for having that weapon on your person.

Now, if someone came at you and just punched them or swung at them with your backpack, you would not be liable for any injuries they sustained...as long as you used equal force. Basically what that means is that you can't shoot someone for poking you; you have to defend yourself with force equal to the force that your assailant is using.

I think your best bet is to take some self-defense classes, like you said. Personally, I would reccomend Krav Maga, which is a goal-oriented martial art (the goal being to disable an attacker) that is based on instinctive reactions and reflexes. There are no competitions like in some other forms of hand to hand combat. There are also no hard and fast rules - the goal is to inflict as much pain as possible with the least amount of effort, making it perfect for people who want to learn hand-to-hand combat purely for self-defense purposes.

You could also get in touch with your local police department and ask them what kind of self-defense gear is legal in your area, as these laws vary from state to state and even town to town.

Self defense is not just a word, but it has its' weight in court. YOu must show the jury that your life was in danger and that you had to defend your life because it was threatened. Self defense doesn;t hold water when your assailant has no weapon and you yield a gun and shoot him. You will be charged with a Homicide.
It is much better to walk away from a conflict than enter in to one, but by all means protect yourself.

If you feel the bodily harm to your assailant was the only course of action to take though, he did not yeild a weapon, your gonna have to prove your case intensely should he die from your attack to prevent death. In most cases a self defense plea is not negotiable by the distirct attorney, and no lo pleas are obsolete. You must prove beyond reasonable dount that your life was in danger for you to take the course of action that resulted in your assailants death and it is not easy to do when he is empoty handed. Your better off putting a knife in his hand beforte the police get there...catch my drift!

If you aren't a real badass chances are an assailant will take it away from you and use it on you. Best practice of self defense is prudent behavior. Don't go places that have dangerous reputations. Be aware of your surroundings. Leave yourself an out. Be with a group of people.

im disabled and 52 years old. i was attacked by someone half my age and alot bigger then me. i pulled a knife and now face prison time (30 months for attempted assault in the 2nd degree) when somebody comes up from behind and you have only a split second to react-- i done what i felt was just. i will go to a jury trial in december. i will do my time if found guilty trying to protect myself. you can only use the amount of force necessary. i may have overreacted but i bet that the lowlife will think about it the next time he tries to assault an elderly disabled old man. anyhow-- three squares a day-- free medical and dental- a weight room and cable tv. this sounds like a retirement policy to me. the only problem i have in doing time is i cant jump on my motorcycle and go shag azz when i feel like it

Nothing will happen those are ok to carry but unless you know how to use them they are worthless. Learn to be a weapon without carring one is better.
