I recently came back from my family reunion, and I learned a lot about my ancestors, who lived in America. I am African American and I want to know is there anyway I could find out which African country my ancestors came from? And what was their original family names, because if you know your history, the slaves were re-named when they were brought to America.

There are some good genealogy sites you can go to, and look up names and try to trace back as far as you can, but you may run into a brick wall as far as original country is concerned. But since you know that already, I think you should still try to go back as far as you can. You find out a lot of interesting things about your ancestors regardless. My dad worked on our family history for his side and my mom's and since they came from a small town, they discovered they had a couple of ancestors in common over 100 yrs ago. He looked up census reports, marriage licenses, death certificates, even went to cemetaries and verified info on the tombstones. It was great!
