I am planning to buy a camcorder and have shortlisted some MiniDV models like sony26e/36e/46e and Canon Elura90/100(MVX40i/MVX460). I have read that Canon cameras have a slow auto focus system and also record button operating noises. Elura100 also have a non-extendable eye piece and the size of Elura90 is much bigger than the orhter models I have mentioned. I don't like the touch control panel of Sony which may malfunction in due to continuous operation and also don't have analogue pass though. I am totally confused. Please help me giving particular attention to the two problem I have mentioned.
thank U,

you might just like sharp's vl-z7u - palm sized (but big screen) with built to last buttons placed at the best positions, and most of all, it has analog input/output terminal. other features are almost the same as other brands.

noises are generated by the mechanism but its not heard in the footage's audio

Most of the consumer camcorders pick up some of their own noise in their mic, that's just the nature of the built-in mic. You can add a separate, more sensitive, more directional mic to some camcorders.

Autofocus is also going to be somewhat slow on consumer models. Don't expect too much from anything that sells for $300 - $600. Start raising your expectations above that.

Analog passthrough is very useful if you have old VHS tapes that you want to convert/transfer to DVD or just to your hard drive. Basically, you can plug your VCR or analog VHS/VHS-C camcorder into a set of analog (video + audio) inputs on the digital camcorder, which converts the analog material to Digital Video. From there, to the PC for storage/transfer.

You can never go wrong with Sony. They dominate the DV market. Their touch screen is excellent and is a great idea for outdoor use - fewer controls to get gummed up with dust. Most cameras come with a remote so if you must press buttons -you've got buttons. I've got tons of hours on mine and its been a warrior - I do a lot of tapng at horse events - very dusty. Downloading and editing on your PC is simple too. I opted for Pinnacle Studio with AV/DV board. It's vastly superior to the software Sony provides with their cams, plus I can load VHS tapes onto my PC with it. Sony also has a lot of great after market gadgets, both from Sony and third parties.
