it all depends. If you are working with structures(low level programming), you use C. But if you are using object oriented(high level programming), you use C++ or Java.

The only language used to make software is machine language.
However, in the last fifty years we've managed to invent a lot of programs that will write machine language programs for us. There are tens of thousands of them and you can look up a list on Wikipedia.

In my experience, C++ is most often used for software.
Visual Basic is more commonly used for gaming and visual things.
Java is used for programming applets on the internet (my specialty).
