First of all my apologies to all muslims of other muslim countries. I read about Turkey in Wikipedia and found out that Turkish government and people are not fanatical about Islam like other countries, I mean women are treated well. Is it true? Please tell me about it or any other muslim country which has less restrictions.

As a not so devout muslim from Istanbul I can only confirm that. I sometimes get the impression that some of the population is plagued with the stupidity that ultimate faith in a designated destiny brings but that does not change respect for human life because we had steps of enlightment 100 years ago giving citizen basic human rights which are lacking in most muslim countries today. There is an understanding that islam is for the sake of humanity. That's why there is a great respect for those working for the sake of humanity, also the western countries and the japanese. I suggest you to see Istanbul at least once in your life, take a bath in hamam, see the world's oldest orthodox church (Haghia sophia) and the greatest mosque (blue mosque) side by side! If you need assistance just email me and I will provide you with further tips.

It really depends on What you mean by "cool".

I'd think it is the coolest subjectively, but not just because it's Muslim or not... Here are my reasons.

- Turkey has incredibly diverse history. Greeks, Trojans, Hitits, Frigians, Sumerians, Byzantines, Romans, Arabs, Ottomans, Seljuks etc to name few. Most of the known civillization to the West was born in Anatolia.

- Turkey has incredibly diverse heritage both culturally and ethnically. You can identify 7 main sources; Anatolia, the Balkans, East Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Mediterranean, and Middle East.

- Turkey has more "Roman History" than Italy, and more "Greek" History than Greece.

- It is the birthplace of Christianity as we know it. Even Santa Claus was born in Turkey.

- Istanbul is the only city in the world that stretches across two continents. It was the largest city on Earth for centuries, and it still is the largest city in Europe. It has been capital to 4 Empires.

- It is the Largest of Turkic Countries.

- Its laws are predominantly based on European Laws. Practically all daily systems and norms are European as well (Alphabet, Calendar, education, science etc). On the other hand, Most people are Muslims, and the Language is Central Asian. There is also a huge Middle Eastern influence through a) Regional and Demographic Influence, b) Islamic Influence (Arabic religious norms), c) Earlier Persian Administrative and Historical influence

- In short, Turkey is an incredibly unique country, and may look like an unprecedented example to you although it's been there in this state for centuries.

I was just there this July, and things are changing. The government is now Conservative and has a very conservative muslim agenda, and it is starting to succeed. The Prime Minister is attempting to run for PResident, so that would drastically change soon, as he is a very, very conservative man. In Turkey, the President has the power to change the constatution by himself, so he will make things much different. In regards to womens rights, yes they are definately more equal than typical Americans believe most Muslim nations are, though I am not sure if our perseption is reality in places other than Turkey, as I have never been to them. Women choose weither they want to wear the traditional clothng or clothes like modern clothes we would think of as normal, though this is generally up to how religious the family is. Turkish people do not think of Americans as "evil" like we are led to believe all Muslims do, but I gotta say their food gets boring after the first week. Also, the eastern half of the country, that which borders with Iran, is more conservative than the major cities like Istanbul and Ankara. I guess that Turkey is an over all nice place to be, and that they are very much like America, though with a much stronger Islamic influence and a few developmental difficulties that come with all relatively new countries.

It is true, Turkey is the coolest country in the world (I'm not being objective here:). You can't actually call a country Muslim or Christian. Yes, the majority of Turkish people practice Islam but still you can only call it a muslim country if you can call the States a Christian country.

Turkey is not ruled by religion. It is secular. Nobody has to obey the Islamic rules. Now, the conservative party is on charge. Although they want to change things as they like, it's difficult even for them. And they'll soon be out of the sight, hopefully!!!

Of course we don't have everything perfect here, but sometimes I see my country misrepresented in the West. We are very very different from Middle East countries. Women don't have to cover their faces, etc. Actually, you would be surprised to see two women walking side by side, one wearing turban (something like a scarf to cover your head) one wearing mini skirt.

well...as a Turk, all i can say is, turkey is one of the greatest countries on earth, yes you will see also people who are covert but it is very modern, and it is a great place to go on vacation, that's why so many Europeans but property there for the retirement, also i wanna mention that turkey has alot of historical specialties, for example Ephesus, a place with important status in the bible is in turkey, the grave of virgin Mary is there....there is actually one place in turkey which i recommend for people if they wanna visit turkey, that way you enjoy a great beach atmosphere, exiting night life, and fun and get to see all the places i just mentioned. i think one of the factors why turkey is not comparable with other Muslim countries, is most of turkey belongs to Asia, and not to Africa it is a totally different ethnicity, and to understand why turkey is so liberal you have to read about the history, like the ottoman empire etc.. i hope i could bee a help

I think Dubai is quite cool.. seems to allow most things, and is the highlight of the Middle East.

Malaysia isn't too bad.. if only because 2/3 of their population aren't Muslim anyway.. (ie. Chinese and Indians).

Turkey tries to be a secular/civil government, but they have poor Human Rights records to date, and have gone overboard on military.. not to mention the low standard of living in rural areas.

yeah.. probably its is.. coz the rules r much more liberal & women work n do business equal to the men.. Turkey is much more modernised in a way.. unlike other muslim countries where women r expected to sit at home cook & have kids... as well as bear with the torture inflicted by men.

I would say Dubai, but Islam has its set laws, be it any country. Its just that Muslims of these countries are pretty liberated. You are misinformed if you think women are badly treated in Islam.
