I've had my dentures (full set) since 2004. I only take them out to soak/brush them and clean my mouth. (I do that 3 times a day.) Since I use Polident 5-Minute tablets, I only have my teeth out about 30min a day. I even sleep in them. My gums appear healthy. Is this a safe practice?

I'm not comfortable being seen without my teeth. When I go to bed, my husband is there. I think its pointless to look nice in front of the rest of the world and look a mess in front of your spouse/family. They are the most important people I deal with. Why not give them my best?

[I was in a car accident. My head went through the windshield. Most of the teeth in the front of my mouth were knocked out/damaged. My jawbone was cracked in several places. By the time I recovered from the accident and the infections from the various surgeries, the remaining teeth were brittle so I had them removed and got a full set.]

your body usually tells u when something ur doing is bad for it with a sign of irritation, a rash, pain even bleeding. but if u feel none of that then ur probably fine. its obvious ur hygien is very good and im sure ur dentist would have told u something about that when u got them in 2004. but its always good sense to ask a medical question to doctors. they know more then us.

It might not be your dentures damaging your gums but the simple fact the roots of your teeth are gone therefore the bones begin to deteriorate. Your denture does help with the deterioration due to friction from chewing, talking etc. Outside of getting implants to save the bones and gums there is little you can do. You however may need a new denture if your denture isn't made correctly.

My mother's bones and gums have deteriorated so much now that her denture sits directly on nerves causing her great pain.

My beautiful dear friend got dentures in 2000 and could have been in a beauty contest before after just after getting them. Today in just 6 years she has gone from a gorgeous woman to an old looking sunken faced woman who looks like she is in her early 60's and she is just 35. All because of bone resorption. She didn't want to spend the money to get her teeth fixed and now wishes with all her heart she had as dentures were not the answer.
