What stops people from doing that is because it hurts other people. Perhaps for some people it is the threat of Hell, but if you think that you want to do it, you should seek help because you could be a danger to society.

Probably not the only thing, since my upbringing instilled it in me. However, ultimately, it is the only real thing which I find is holding me accountable for my actions. If I were an atheist, I would find no objective, intellectual reason to treat people with any dignity at all. As I mentioned on one of my recent questions, if I were an atheist, I would probably not see people as being any more worthwhile than a dog -- and I don't think too highly of dogs.
the real problem is how one defines "the right thing" in the first place without an objective, divine definition. Over the course of the past 3000 years there have been many cultures with different defintions of what's "right". For example, for nearly 2000 years, it has been almost universally accepted that abortion was wrong. (Hipporcrates prided himself on never having performed the procedure.) But nowadays our society often deems it ok. There are countless other examples. So, if one agrees that there is a thing as "the right thing", then one must first figure out how "right" is defined and known.
and, if you think that non-divine origins are possible, ultimately, isn't it just a matter of preference? Let's take murder for example. Suppose you say, "well, I wouldn't like someone to murder me, so I won't murder others" -- still, this is just a personal and somewhat arbitrary opinion. I wouldn't want someone to fire me from my job, does that mean I shouldn't fire anyone? obviously not. furthermore, what if someone says, "well, I don't care about the 'do unto others...' idea"?
Let's say you won't murder because its illegal (something I've heard people say) -- what if the person doesn't care about getting caught, is it OK then? Or what if he's sure he won't get caught?
The whole issue seems rather clear to me. But i'm sure you've thought this through well enough, ahem.

No one is particularly concerned about heaven or hell until they are at the moment of becoming non existent, and then they are resolved to march off to the great void; or, they accept redemption and the afterlife for whatever it is. For those of us who have had plenty of time to think about it, I personally would rather have the love and grace and mercy of God, and to demonstrate that He, God, happen to create in man a noble being capable of art, music, love and charity--that man can rise above himself and be even greater than he is now. We must be a disappointment to Him at times, but there are times I know that in the cosmic scheme of things God is smiling and saying: you have it right, keep going. No, its not the fear of hell I contemplate, its that my time here is so very limited and I wish I could have done more than I really did. Man's basic desire is to create, not destroy. Evil, however, has a very different agenda than I do. I think we do the right thing every day, at least we try to do the right thing, and some days we are just simply better at than other days. As for taking a bribe from angels--on that point, if anyone up there wants to offer a bribe--well, I happen to like chocolate--I like chocolate a lot. I might be encouraged to do more good in the world if my passion for sweets were tempted a bit more.

If your talking about the threat of a burning hell where some churches say people go & burn yet never burn up, then I'll have to say that the bible doesn't teach about this kind of hell at all! You see most churches are false! God never threatens anyone to get them to do the right thing. He just says if you do the right thing you'll be blessed & if you don't you'll be cursed.
Example: If you get married & you & your spouse are faithful to one another than it's a blessing!
If not than you could get a sexual disease or someone could be killed out of jealously. Children suffer & so on!

It is your choice, you don't have to be. God accepts us all with open arms and pure love. I don't do these things because this type of thinking isn't in my nature. But really, I did have a time when I went crazy and my behavior was atrocious due to the fact that I didn't believe after much brainwashing that heaven would ever be attainable. This is wrong in my eyes.
Angels don't bribe us, people do.
Thank God we are free of the irresponsibility of man to control the world. Religions do this because the men that set down the rules in the beginning were greedy hateful men that wanted fear of Hell to consume the common man into conforming to their own sickness, playing god in the name of God.

No, the thought of hurting other people. Only low life cowards with consiences who have to reflect on their own destruction to keep from destroying other's need to blieve in hell. Unfortunately, there are people like tht out there so religion has a purpose b/c the people who are the low life, close minded cowards r usually the ones who blieve tht BS.

We must try and save people who believe in God. I know there are many nice people who believe in God, and they wouldn’t intentionally harm anyone. I suspect they would be just as nice if they didn’t believe in God, it’s just how their biological model works for them.
The real evil amongst us, are the vast majority of religious followers and believers who have clearly shown over time to be the major instigators of wars, violence, abuse, greed and practically everything evil on our planet.
We must stop innocent young lives, especially from birth, from being sucked into this evil religious trap. Humanity deserves at least an effort being made in this direction rather than just watching religion and the so-called do goody goody followers corrupting our world with evil.
Religious people are so cruel to their children – God is just a monster. Nothing could possibly be more mentally damaging to children than telling them over and over again from birth there exists an invisible person (God or whatever) who is unwilling to prove he exists watching them every second of every day, reading their thoughts, and if they don't believe in this invisible person they will be tortured for eternity.
Yet we tell the same children that monsters don't exist so it's silly to be scared of monsters.

even before I was a Christian I never had a desire to rape, kill, hurt, lie, or cheat. Angels do not threaten or bribe by the way. They are here to help Christians and to fight the devil.

Not the hell, but may be the fear of getting cought and being subjected to the 3rd degree torture by the Indian Police which is famous for its exploits. They can catch an antelope and make him confess that it is a lion.
