Yes you can specialise and become a surgical R.N. but I don't know if you can qualify for that without working for awhile in a hospital as a general R.N. first. You would have to check with your nursing instructors about that or check with the human resource offices of hospitals near you. Ther is also a possibility of working as a surgical R.N. in the private surgery suites that some surgeons are starting to have in their offices.

If you are in a 4 year R.N. program and will get a B.S.N. when you graduate, you can get a job as a Public Health Nurse if you get Public Health Certified. I don't know what the laws of your state are so maybe you don't have to have a B.S.N. If you become a public health nurse you will not do any patient care. You will supervise and manage the care that people receive in their homes.

Of course you can only get these type of jobs if there are openings somewhere and you can be seen as better than the other R.N.s applying for the jobs.

By the way, I have never allowed myself to be called a "male nurse". I don't know if You will be called a Professional Nurse or a Registered Nurse in the state you will practice in but at some times you will experience sexual discrimination because you are a man working in a field that has been traditionally a "womans"
field. The reason I have never accepted the title "male nurse" is that is inaccurate and tends to lead to discrimination.

An orthopedic nurse works with orthopedic patients, A surgical nurse works with surgical patients; the title "male nurse" implies that you only work with male patients and that you are a different kind of nurse than the women working as R.N.s. Why not let people know from the beginning that you are not a "second class"
R.N. I always replied to people who called me a male nurse, That I am a male R.N.

Although I am not a male, I can answer this question. Male nurse, do not need to get stuck doing the dirty jobs. I have worked with them in the Emergency room, Intensive care, cardiac care, management, OR, nurse anesthetist, office nurse, nurse practitioner. The entire field of nursing is open to male nurses. Not sure what decade your instructors or your texts are in, but in today's nursing environment, I have even had male nurses working in OB/GYN... All I can say is go for whatever field interests you. If you are looking for where the money is, nurse anesthetist should be your choice. Most will make triple digit incomes, but will have MAJOR responsibility to go with the salary. Enjoy nursing....

Most nurses are female and all nurses handle male genitals in the course of their training or duties at some point. By the time they've seen a few hundred they've forgotten what any individual's looks like.

with a BSRN, you can do several things....several LVN programs use bachelor's graduates as instructors....;you can go into Nurse Auditing; Nursing Consultation; Staff Coordinator for a Home Health Agency; and many more areas....the only problem is that with most any positions like that they are going to want you to have gotten "your feet wet" so to speak, just a little bit anyway as far as clinical experience....it is honest of you to at least admit that this is what you want and I don't blame you, but hon, the climate in Nursing right now is just such that I'm afraid you are probably going to have to do at least a little bit of clinical before you can land any of these positions....from an old veteran retired BSRN, good luck in your career♥
