Interesting question.

The widespread belief in God has contributed to the development of our social mores and beliefs. It's hard to imagine how that development would have changed had people known all along that there were no God.

A friend of mine says that he HAS to believe in hell, or else he would kick a lot more a** and be a lot more violent to ensure that justice prevails in the here and now. I think that if we all knew that there was no God and therefore no hope for ultimate justice, we would all be a bit more keen to see that we get what we want - of course, though, everyone else would probably feel the same way, and so people would be much more ruthless to protect what they have.

Frankly that is a dumb question, because it implies that the only thing holding you back from murdering someone is God. That's like saying if there were no police would you rampage and loot and murder and rape. That would just make us savages. If that's all humanity is, if God or a law is all that is preventing any and all of us from being savages, then if I was God I'd point a nice big asteroid this way.

not really, because humans like police enforce the laws that keep many of us from killing and raping, not to mention my parents and teachers taught me to treat others as I would want to be treated...yes, Christian values, but also social values at the same time. I don't know that I would really do much else if there was no religion in my life, maybe listen to more John Lennon songs, that's about it...imagine!

Yes I think many of us would lose some civility but the fact is we, as a race, are moving naturally in the direction of civility. Whether you believe in a God or not you cannot ignore the history of mankind. Look how far we've come and how far we can go. Jesus by his nature showed us a potential we should hope to achieve regardless whether you think of him as messiah or not. To me it doesn't matter because nature will take its course and nature is pointing towards civility.

No, whether there is a God or not, I still would have major problems hurting people. Even before I was saved, I didn't like the idea of harming another being, human or animal, intentionally.

why would i want to? even if there was no god, i wouldn't revert myself to some animalistic behavior as killing or raping another human being. your question poses some thought, but i value the peopkle around me and the lessons that can be learned form them.

besides, for the atheists out there, they don't believe in god but they don't go on a killing spree. and granted there are christians who say they do what they do in the name of god.

A guy is on death row. He was in special ed for severe behavior handicap. Dad went to his last IEP meeting with a hat that read, "You must have me confused with someone that gives a damn". Actually happened. Dad called the meeting because he didn't want son to have to stay after school for disrupting class. After kid buried friend alive to steal his car. Daddy got religion before reporters interviewed him. Now that's religion in action.

It would make it easier for others to kill, rape or murder you also! So punishment would come anyway.

I think or at least hope i'd act the way i do right now but i'd probably do something illegal since I would know that i wouldnt get punished. Problem is i'd have guilt.
