The common hop or Humulus Lupulus grows in either a vine state or a bushy sprawling configuration depending on were it is grown. It is related to the nettle family and is grown in a variety of cliamates and is found around the world. The full plant itself if not a flower but the female flower cones are what are used in brewing and thus most often are the female plants the only plants harvested. Hops give beer it's trademark bitter taste that counter act the sweet malt that is added.

Hops are also used in herbal medicine and for other uses such as natural dye production.

Hops are twining perennials having cordate leaves and flowers arranged in conelike spikes; the dried flowers of this plant are used in brewing to add the characteristic bitter taste to beer.

I saw hops growing once. They grow on huge trellises the size of telephone poles all connected together at the top with steel wire. It's all shady and green down inside under the canopy. Beautiful.
