Why do you need a God to tell you not to do those things?
I thought it was just common sense to treat people you want to be treated in order to maintain a civil society for you and your kids to live in.

God has given you that common sense.

Actually if you read Romans Chapters one through three, this very thing is addressed.

Paul is speaking of Jews and Gentiles, meaning that Jews have had the law of Moses telling them not to do these things and the gentiles have not had the law to tell them not to do these things, yet the gentiles know not to do them.

Paul goes on to explain that just because the gentiles did'nt have the law of Moses does'nt mean anything at all. Gentiles and Jews were all given this knowledge when they were created. All the Jews had that was different than the gentiles was the awesome gift of keeping the oracles(writings) of God in safekeeping.

Romans chapter three verse nine

What then? are we better than the gentile? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Gentiles that they are all under sin.

So, even before Jesus came and paid the debt for our sin, we non Jews were blessed with the knowledge of right and wrong.

It makes sense, but it's not common sense.

We are born evil and must LEARN to be good.

I don't know where you live, but here in America, it's a fairly scary place. When I was a boy, I could go anywhere I wanted without fear. Now, my kids can't even play in the front yard safely.

People here Do lie, cheat , steal, killl, rape, murder, etc., etc.. and you can't tell where it's coming from anymore.

We do need God, to keep us moving in the right direction. The problem is that fewer people are following him and the majority are following their own evil desires.

So, what planet are YOU from, that people are using their common sense naturally?

First off, not all of us have kids, Second off, we don't all want to live in a morale society, Third off, why should we obey the rules of men, what authority do they have over us? They have just has much rule as we do. However with God we have a ruler who is over us, who can punish us anytime He wishes. If you used common sense the rules of man should not apply to people because, they are just that, the rules of other human beings, not the rules of a being higher than any other. God also says that we are to obey the law of man, so we do.

Several people tell me not to. My parents tell me not to. My grandparents tell me not to. My martial arts instructor tells me not to. Even I tell myself not to.

Seeing all of these people are right religion decided to take the same view so they repeated what they learned. God overall appreciates this idea as well. So the people who need one voice more to not kill, murder, rape, and cheat get that from God. Just becuase God says it, does not mean he is the only source.

In simple terms ask yourself this: Did the dictionary make words or did words make the dictionary?

In the end the only question your asking is the one above. I hope you find what I have attempted to show you as some form of the truth.

No, my gods don't have to tell me not to do something that I feel deep down is wrong. Also a reason that I am the religion I am today: I don't want to be told by any deity that what I believe is wrong, that I shouldn't love those who are homosexual or that I shouldn't use contraception because I believe that the world's population is growing quite fast enough without more help from me, etc.

No, we do not do these things becasue when a person is in a saving relationship they live a change life. We no longer want to participate in the sinful lifestyle that we did before we got into a personal relationship with God through Christ. As a matter of fact we are not capable of these behaviors because they are not consistant with what we believe.

well, I didn't do any of those things before I believed in God. God gives us all basic morals...you will notice that almost all socities have a common morality like the belief that it is wrong to kill. This is true even for those who live isolated from the modern world, this is because God gave us these moral understandings so we could all be more like Him.

The other person that stated all of these quotes from the bible does not know what they speak of, when Jesus came into the world He came to abolish the old covenant that is in the Old testament. He gave the greatest command which is to love the Lord our God with all our hearts, minds, bodies, souls and strength and the last one is like it to love our neighbor as ourselves, so the infrence here is if people like this other person that answered your question don't love themselves, how can they love others.

You've made the mistake of treating this as a religious question. It's an ethical question, i.e. philosophical, which is distinct from religion. Ask Plato, Aristotle, Socrates. that way you can get a morally sound answer from non-judeo christian sources. Good luck with that.
