A stirred Martini is not cold....it is made directly in a martini glass and has no ice. The mixture of vermuth and gin is stirred in the Martinin glass.
A shakened Martini is made in a tumbler with ice and then is shaken to make it cold and then just the liquid is strained into a martini glass.

First, what kind of Martini are you making? Gin drinkers & Vodka drinkers are different altogether.
Chill your glass - meaning, put ice in glass, add water & let sit while you make the drink
Put ice in container, pour gin to 1 - 1/12 oz. Add 1/4 or less Vermouth. Stir generously Nice & slow - don't crack ice
Strain into emptied chillled martini glass. Now it's nice & cold - hence the name Cold Gin
Chill glass as above - Pour vodka as same - add the other ingredients, per drink - depending on what you're making, and shake.
The foam looks "cute" & add garnish - lemon wedge, lime, etc. & shaking makes vodka taste better too.

A shaken martini will be colder and have small ice chips floating in it. Stirred will just chill the liquor a bit won't water down the liquor as much as the shaken 1.

Martini (as taught by my mother):
In a bar mixer (looks like a metal gravy mixer with a cover) fill with ice
add two jiggers extremely good Gin or Vodka
a drop of extremely good Vermouth
cover; shake
strain (use one of those weird curly things with a handle) into a chilled Martini Glass. Garnish with your choice of: green olive, cocktail onion, or garlic.
Shaken is fine - just don't agitate!
Drink while smoking a fine imported Turkish cigarette in a carved holder while reclining, listening to Nat King Cole. Or, guzzle while cooking dinner for five children with cats, dogs, toys, and homework underfoot.
