Hey, Beach Chick... I'm a baker/decorator. My best suggestion for a cake stand without an actual cake stand would be a glass bowl with a wide base (inverted). You could try a dollar store and even use a bunch of decorative glasses (or maybe votive candle holders) holding up a plate, too. Kind of a shabby chic look if you can find some pretty colored glass stuff. Who knows, they may have cake stands there, too! If you want a real cake stand, and can't find a cheap one locally, you might want to try sugarcraft.com. They're pretty reasonable, have a good selection for baking stuff, and are pretty quick on shipping.

E-mail me with fondant questions if you like... it's actually pretty easy to work with if you know the tricks.

Cut some cardboard out into a circle or square (whatever shape the cake is in), cover with foil or even wrapping paper depicting the occassion for the cake or cover with the paper doilies you can purchase at a hobby store for a pretty presentation.

Invert a large salad bowl and cover it with a pretty cloth or scarf and put the cake on it. Wilton's has pillars and cake plates you could put together. I use 2 plates and 4 bubble pillars and they really look neat. You will need 2 plates so the pillars will stand free. One holds the bottom and one holds the top.

Cover an 8 inch plant pot with foil or pretty paper. Invert. Attach cake plate with florist's goo. Place on table surrounded with flowers.

Try covering a piece of cardboard with foil.

get a bowl... mixing bowl, salad bowl... 9 inches diameter... put it upside down, put a little plastic wrap on top, so it doesn't slide... and any nice dinner plate on top... got it?
