Sorry, on behalf of all those who dont know the difference, and dont know they dont know the difference. Yes, i'd say it 's rather common. It's very unfair, too. I've heard this from a lot of people who really dont care about knowing anything more beyond hot dogs, lite american beer, and "football season".

No, it sounds like this person didn't listen in any world history class they might have taken in high school, or that it wasn't a very good class. I know that my world history class included an overview of many of the more historic religion and their foundations as is seen through historical documentation and archaeological evidence. There are too many dissimilarities within the Hindu and Muslim religions for this person to know anything at all about any religion but their own, although I admit that the sentiment is good.
Another thing that might have thrown this person off, though, is that the middle eastern and indian subcontinent peoples have very similiar skin tones. I don't know if that was a contributing factor as I can't read this person's mind, but I would say that there is a high probability.

Ever since I made the mistake of assuming that all Hindus worshipped some kind of deities (i.e. not God), Hinduism has peaked my interest. This has been going on for quite a while now. Ruchjat K's answer - lack of knowledge - made me want to know all the more about it, but not the Hinduism where people worship dieties, but this new Hinduism which is not familiar to me - the one you seem to practice - where you believe in God alone and try to become the best person you can be by doing good deeds... I would have read some books, but I was in Lebanon (with the war going and all that...) plus i don't want to waste time on research sorting out the 2 types of Hinduism. I was wondering if you would be interested in teaching me about it, you seem like one of the nicest and most respectful people on yahoo, so I dont think there's a better person I could learn it from. I think talking to people directly and having discussions with them is even more exciting and interesting than reading books. It would be an honour if you agreed, but I know that you probably might not have the time and energy to do this for a stranger, so I totally understand if you choose not to.
As for your question, to my knowledge, people dont seem to confuse Hindus and Muslims (perhaps that person was making a joke, or maybe he meant Pakis, in that case, then yes they do confuse them because many Pakis are Muslims).
Peace be with you.
My email and Msn messenger is soli__man@hotmail.com (2 underscores between 'soli' and 'man')
P.S: It's nice to have you back, I thought you were going to quit yahoo answers. I'm glad you didnt :)

Muslims arent all paki/indian.. If you havent noticed Muslims are people from anywhere in the world not just asian ppl. If you see in every state/city/country theres muslims everywhere ,as I said again not only asians are muslims.
All types of race and skin are muslims.
maybe indian/paki muslims to hindu ppl get confused. But if a real muslims act like a real muslim and dress like modesty, people would have prblem with these common mistakes of saying if he/shes a hindu or not.

"situation-free ameliorations"? Lol! basically finding out on. i'm uncertain somewhat. I attended a Divali competition as quickly as with replaced into distinctly similar to an Eid competition, minus the fireworks, lol! Henna cubicles, cubicles for ethnic clothing and crafts, ethnic meals, young babies dressed up all superb and glossy!, oh, and on the Divali competition, that they had a level and had some classic dancers and musicians, and on the tip that they had a d.j. enjoying a mix of Hindi-Western hip hop, lol! that's no longer situation-free in Eid fairs, lol! distinctly lots a similar different than fairly of saris and kameez it somewhat is hijabs and jalabiyas (and a few kameez too). :-P

No it is not common for people not knowing the difference between muslim and hindu. We as muslims have a clear and significant differences The differences are like day and night. We pray to only one God,but hindu pray to many gods.Hindu pray in the temple, muslim pray at home and in the mosque and other places in emergency..Hindu pray also to ask help from their ancestors.Muslim only pray to God Almighty and ask for God's help to forgive the wrong deeds of their ancestors.Hindu believe that their soul will emerge again in this earth after they died (reincarnation).Muslim believe that all the deads will go to heaven and hell after resurrection and will not come again into this earth.Hindu pray to their intermediaries the gods and pray also to the god of gods that called sang hyang widi wesha.Hindu has a classified group of people such as brahmana, ksatria etc,but muslim has no classification like that.We are all the same the difference upon our God lies only on their taqwa or the degree of their obedient to our God.,piety or devotion.Hindu pray to their statues which made by themselves, unlogical.Muslim does not pray to statues, because for muslim it will get sin.The dead body in hindu will be burned out and pour their ashes to the sea. but muslim's dead body will be burried in the tomb as soon as when died..Hindus give some foods, fruits, flowers etc to their gods, but muslims give only thanksgiving in their pray.

I think that somebody is just trying to annoy...but maybe there is not enough of knowledge of the difference. I see here all the time "Christians think this" and All Christians are like that"..we are all individuals. There is good people and bad people everywhere...and there is some good and bad on everyone of us.
The Bible says that I am not allowed to have any other gods, so He was aware of other gods. I am concentrating to know my God. My God loves everybody and respects their free will.
Do not get upset with people. You know your heart. And your heart will lead you to the truth.

Yes, it's common in the USA, anyway. Most people here don't care about anything outside their county except for sports or shopping.
