i have an very old chrome plated colt 45 it has various dates on the gun itself dating from 1897 to 1913. U. S Army and has M1911A1 serial # with U. S property 1685152 bought in the Philippines Apr 1946i have the paperwork and a book. this belonged to my Grandpa. Not thatI want to part with it so don't ask Iam not ready for that and I don't know if i would ever be since my grandpa is now 94 yrs old It may be the last thing i have from him. I just need and want information on it. it is in good condition. Any gun people out there???? thanks alot

some of these old colts are worth A LTO. I dont know about the Philippines 1911, however if it is a WWII issue and bought used in 1946, or a GI (gov. issued) pistol, it has the potential to be worth multiple thousands of dollars. If i were you, i would have it appraised, insure it, but first check gunbroker for another that appears to be like it.

There are books available to look up the serial number. It can tell you when and where it was manufactured. Other books can tell you what the potential value is.

My wife's grandpa had a WWII German Army issue Luger pistol. We looked up the serial numbers and found out it was made in 1944 in what was a train manufacturing plant. The book even said the factory had been converted from making train parts to making pistols after it had been bombed.

Take it to a gunsmith for a real evaluation. There is no way anyone here could look at a picture or read the information you have provided and give you an accurate estimate. In fact, it would be better to take it to more than one gunsmith and collect estimates.
