The term "gay" has a strange meaning these days.
It used to mean "happy".
In the last few decades, it has come to mean "homosexual".

Now, teens just use it for something bad or dislikable from their
point of view. It has taboo connotations, but probably doesn't
mean homosexual - especially since I've heard teens use the
term who don't know what homosexual means.

In any case, I think you need to consider the source. Who
told you that the Martial Arts were gay?

I assure you, watching a black-belt in action is a humbling
experience.

I doubt that these people have any different
percentage homosexuality than the rest of the population.
That is, like EVERYWHERE else, probably 10% of them
are homosexual.

It may be that your compatriots are referring to the clothing
that they sometimes wear - it may not appear either fashionable
or particularly manly.

However, the traditions of the ancient oriental arts far predate
western clothing.

If this is something you are interested in doing, I *HIGHLY*
recommend it. Its also very useful when somebody attacks
you ... and discovers just how gay it isn't!

Because they watch "final fu" on mtv which is a mockery of traditional martial arts.
Or they watch wrestling or Judo and are like "eww men hugging eachother, Martial arts is just an excuse for men being able to hug." Which is retarded, yes some positions do look quite gay. But i'm sure those gay people who say MA is gay need to be put in a good headlock and shoved down the toilet.

P.S. My parents suck.

Haha! I sometimes think the way "gay" has been so almost automatically tied to homosexuality, but truly Webster's Dictionary defines it best as:

1. Bright and pleasant; promoting a feeling of cheer; "a cheery hello"; "a gay sunny room"; "a sunny smile".

2. Full of or showing high-spirited merriment; "when hearts were young and gay"; "a poet could not but be gay, in such a jocund company"- Wordsworth; "the jolly crowd at the reunion"; "jolly old Saint Nick"; "a jovial old gentleman"; "have a merry Christmas"; "peals of merry laughter"; "a mirthful laugh".

3. Given to social pleasures often including dissipation; "led a gay Bohemian life"; "a gay old rogue with an eye for the ladies".

4. Brightly colored and showy; "girls decked out in brave new dresses"; "brave banners flying"; "`braw' is a Scottish word"; "a dress a bit too gay for her years"; "birds with gay plumage".

5. Offering fun and gaiety; "a gala ball after the inauguration"; "a festive (or festal) occasion"; "gay and exciting night life"; "a merry evening".

6. Homosexual or arousing homosexual desires.

Hopefully with these definitions, you are able to associate the right meaning to the term in use. God Bless.

Semantics aside, I hear this quite frequently, and it irritates the heck out of me. I'm a jiujitsu instructor. I can't tell you how many times I've invited people to train, only to hear some variation of, "Rolling around with other sweaty men is a little too gay for me. You have fun with that."

It comes down to one thing: FEAR. People reject that which they cannot do (sour grapes) and are afraid of that which they don't understand. Too many guys are so insecure about their male image, that they can't stand the thought of being put into a compromising position. They don't want to find out that they're not as big and strong and tough as they think they are. Also, they're afraid of some cultural taboo against two males in close proximity.

Tough luck for them--they'll wish they knew what they were doing when they're getting the crap beat out of them in a bar or downrange some day.

Because they dont understand the meaning of martial arts. They never done it before, they are ignorant, so they dont know what it is. that is why they call it gay.

No idea. I've never heard anyone say that and I don't know why they would. If there's one thing that's certainly not 'gay' it's martial arts.

because they obviously have no real concept of what martial arts is about and what it can offer. they are probably scared of the hard work and discipline behind it. it also is believed to be a violent sport for big headed, self loving tough guys.....not so. it keeps you fit, agile and strong in mind and body, which benefits outside of the dojo (training area) also. at least most peolpe are aware only to use it for self defence with justifiable force....some do use it to show off....shame on them.

Because they fear those who are accomplished in it.

Like a child..... If they can't have it.... They don't want it.

If they can't do it.... They say they wouldn't want to and / or put it down.
